Why not have a league system put in place! Which will solve many a problem on DPC! Yey I hear you cry!
Right, divide the users into 4-8 groups/leagues (depending on how many members there are. For example 100 users per league and 8 leauges.
The leauges are as in UK football - premier holds the highest ranked teams, then 1st division, 2nd division and so forth. This will be calculated somehow - but will be simple - something like if you average between 5.1 and 5.9 your in the 1st Division. Get that upto a 6 and your promoted into the Premier league.
Users with 3 months of inactivity will be dropped into the lowest league.
You could also have leauge specific challenges.
This will be both fun (another dimension to DPC) and it will solve the constant argument about people dropping out of DPC due to lack of decent images. Also it will solve the 'people not getting enough comments' row. Each league can only vote in their leauge thus narrowing it down. And further more it will give many more people more satisfication and help more people to keep posting images and to keep using DPC.
Hey, different league members could even have different colored shirts ;)

Can we have rugby matches between leagues as well? ;)

Wouldn't there have to be a requirement for everyone to submit to every challenge? Otherwise people would just have an incentive to only submit to challenges where they know they'll score well, and then never submit again - even allowing for your three month limit.
Quite like your limiting the voting - though I'd suggest that the first images someone sees should come from their own 'league', and then they can continue to vote on other shots.
Don;t think anyone's going to go for it though - perhaps an idea for another site ...

Don't get me wrong, I value all comments. But the comments from people in the >6.5 league could be much more helpful to me than those in the 4.5 to 5.0 league where I reside. |

The only part of jonpink's proposal that bothers me is not having as many people as are willing to do so eligible to vote/comment on my entries. The more voters/commenters the better. |

Actually I think the reverse is true- If there are 300 pictures and 300 voters people can hardly get through the voting, let alone commenting. If there are 100 voters and 100 pictures you'll get a lot more thoughtful comments. |

And I think a league system would be very effective if the leagues were multi leveled and randomly assigned. More like team sports. Team A would develop a loyalty and identity and a desire to beat Team B. Some form of subdivision would be better than the mega challenges. |

Have the site council members be the captains and let them pick their teams. Whichever one has the lowest average picks first!

sounds like a good idea as far as leveling things out go, but i agree with trinch - i think comments/suggestions from some of the "site favorites" or photographers way out of my league are probably going to be (on the average) more beneficial to me than someone who has about as much experience as me.. which isn't to say i can't learn from someone like me, but i'm sure many people like to hear advice from photographers with as much experience as possible.

I have received excellent, even erudite comments from voters whose own ranking was lower than mine and lousy ones from those with a higher ranking. Of course, the opposite is equally true. Ideally, I'd rather receive few critiques than many comments. There are, apparently, not many capable of writing one.
There are, however, some yet unskilled photographers whose eyes are keen and whose vision is alive, capable of articulating what they see. Others may be artists who know what they know from working in a different medium. I wouldn't want to miss their contribution. |

I don't think being in a different 'league' has anything to do with who would comment on images.
The people who go looking for pictures to provide helpful, useful feedback on them do just that. Go looking for them. I doubt anything would change to make that less likely to happen. |

There are over 11,000 registered users. That could take awhile!!!!! |

Don't we want to encourage people to only submit photos that they think will do well, rather than just submitting for the sake of submitting?
