The core benefit of having a camera is so that you may make photos and upload them to DPC.

Core benefit is that it gives you a good reason to go out on your own, wander around in nature, breath fresh air, relax, enjoy and then come home with pictures which prolong the experience. |

Is this a homework for you? Let me see. I love mine, because:
- I can capture unrepeatable beautiful moments in my life
- you can share your adventures in photos with others
- you can capture shots from your view, for example you can show people views they would never think about
- photographs can be really beautiful
Specially for diital ones:
- CHEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP to get photos "developed" :-)
- quick - no wasted thime while getting photos developed
- you can see your shot immediately, you can re-compose it imeddiately if you don't like the first one
- you can shoot as many photos as you want - if you have a memory card that's good enough
- photos are easy to share with others - just DL from memory card
- jmsetzler has right, it's a 10 point benefit - submitting DPC - if I could vote for it :-)
Mmmm... I will think about more okay?

There isn't a 'core benefit'. That's a phrase invented by marketing men and women who are afraid of the unpredictability of the world, as an aid to techniques of selling.
Having a camera enables you to take photos. That's it.
If you want better answers for your purpose, try: record keeping, copying documents and art larger than A3 size, personal, family and historic documentation, enabling you to see under/around things you can't comfortably get to, data storage, etc.

It is a way to express emotions and ideas. |

Here. I stole this from another site:
"Art is giving some interpretation of reality or creating views formed in our minds."
Is that what you need? |

I believe (one) of the core benefits is the camera teaches you to look at your world from many new perspectives and perhaps see a little more than you ever would before (camera).

There it is. An independent mind. No minced words.
My day is made. ;-) |

A camera is a tool that captures images of what is inside its field of view. Film cameras use film, digital cameras use electronic sensors.
I've heard many photographers (myself included) explain that a camera allows them to express themselves visually even though they have minimal drawing skills. For me, that is the "core benefit" though I know that each individual will likely have a different response.
When people see how poorly I draw, they are amazed that I have a degree in commercial art.
