I was sitting here thinking about this damn thread, and how it annoys me that a person would rant and try to change what a person chooses to shoot just because it isn't their thing. Then I realized I have allowed the likes of the OP to change my own shooting. I love shooting pics of my fur kids. I hesitate to enter them in a lot of the Challenges only because I dread the low scores they would get. But then my scores are never very high anyhow. I think I need to start entering more of what I love regardless of what anyone else thinks. Thank you Sam for opening up my eyes.
Now I'm off to set up for some pics of my furry models. |

Ok, first of all: My original post was a parody. I realized that there is always a dog picture in every challenge and instead of just telling you about this observation of mine, I tried a funnier approach and failed.
The two doggies are cute and both fitting and funny for the challenge, that's why the image did well. I never suggested that there's anything wrong with such pictures, on the contrary, I would encourage people to submit clever pictures like that one that meet the challenge so well. |

Hmm... I admit my attempt at being funny obviously failed. And the "" and the additional comment didn't suffice to indicate my intention.
But that people put words in my mouth like "You dont think that animals should be in challenges." or call me an animal hater definitely goes too far. It's actually quite ridiculous doing this just a few posts after I've shared some of my favorite animal shots. And after people have drawn attention to my own animal (and even cat) pictures.
Sometimes, also in image comments, I get the impression that some people want to feel offended and judge others.. |

My cat is a lot more 'internet famous' than I am and with merit really ;)
I love taking photos of her so I've submitted a whole bunch to challenge in addition to just sharing, but yeah I'm used to the - oh not another cat photo *sigh* - reaction by now, everyone has their likes and dislikes.
I've found though that all the cat photography I've done has really helped me when it comes to spotting moments and street photography since cats usually don't take direction well so it's a matter of grabbing the shot when you see it.
PICS!
I'll be continuing taking a lot of cat photos, I enjoy it way too much to stop :)
To be a more on topic though, I'm well aware of the difference between a snap shot and a carefully crafted photo. I've done both, and depending on the audience the snap shots are sometimes just fine (say on a forum full of fanatic cat lovers) on a photography site the well crafted photo will obviously do much better.

And to think I actually considered using a raccoon for the "Mask" challenge.

Siggav, this is indeed one of the most beautiful cats I've ever seen. The pictures are great, too. You should try and train her do to jumps and stuff and then take her to a studio to take amazing, perfect shots. ;-)
By the way, this whole discussion reminds me of the dog and cat diary (you may already have seen on teh internets). I don't know what the original source is, but it is funny (and no, please don't get me wrong again. I'm not a cat hater. But there's some truth to the text, dogs are more likely to seem happy, while cats are somewhat more mysterious):
The Dog's Diary
8:00 am - Dog food! My favorite thing!
9:30 am - A car ride! My favorite thing!
9:40 am - A walk in the park! My favorite thing!
10:30 am - Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing!
12:00 PM - Milk bones! My favorite thing!
1:00 PM - Played in the yard! My favorite thing!
3:00 PM - Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00 PM - Dinner! My favorite thing!
7:00 PM - Got to play ball! My favorite thing!
8:00 PM - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11:00 PM - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

The Cat's Diary
Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an Attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.
For now.

I'll pass the compliments on to Her Highness ;)
Sam - heh.. I've actually already started clicker training her and she'll stand on two legs on command and jump between chairs that I can put quite far a part. She also jumps really high for a specific cat toy called Da Bird, I just need to find a studio that'll let me take her in to a) get her used to it for a bit so she won't freak out and b) take photos
As for the cat mystery and dignity, clearly demonstrated by this photo here :D
btw I'd count that one as a snap shot, it's a cute snap shot but I'd never enter a pic like that into a challenge although it's fine for sharing in a more casual way. |

Sam - I've seen that bit on cats and dogs before but still laugh everytime. It is so fitting. I love it. Thanks for posting. |

Let's see if I've followed the thread properly...
Dogs, Cat, My Kid, Woodies, Squirrel, Sexy Men, Bird and Rubber Ducky...
That's all I got. Oh, except for Violent Fruits & Vegetables - but nobody mentioned those...

And that reminds me of a radio commercial which the highlighted the difference in attitude between dogs and cats and their "owners":
DOG: "Hey, I know you -- you're the guy who gives me food and takes me for walks."
CAT: "This is my house -- you just live here." |

One big difference between cats and dogs --
When you call a dog, it comes running; tail is wagging; he is so happy to see you!
When you call a cat, it takes a message and gets back to you when it is convenient for him. |
