After the well deserved thumping I got in the grace challenge,
this,
I have decided to cut down my submissions and only enter the ones that I think will have a chance of making it into the top 50. I will work on all the challenges and try to do my best, but if my efforts do not seem to shine, I will just keep the photo to myself or maybe place it in my portfolio for comments before it's retired.
I think my problem was thinking more along the lines of "making every challenge". Now it's make every entry count.
If a few more people follow this strategy of self imposed reserve, maybe the pictures that do make it to the challenge will be a joy to score.

I totally agree with you. That would improve the whole contest thing and wouldn't make the voting such a pain ... |

I agree, I have been having "photographers block" lately and cant seem to get a photo that I am totally happy with. I did get in the top 10 in the alone challenge, but im just in a funk and need some rest for a bit, so I may not do the next 2 challenges, unless I have an awesome idea

I took that approach a month or two back and it has made DPC a much more enjoyable experience. I have gone a step further and generally only enter the Members challenges now, unless I have something exceptional for the Open challenges. Add to that an increasing workload and I just don't have time to put much thought into my entries or implement some of my ideas.
Having said that I entered Still Life as I had some down time yesterday..... sorta wish I hadn't now.

I agree. I joined in June and thought I had to enter all the challenges. To tell you the truth I have been embarrassed by my submissions. They have got to be the worst pictures I have ever taken and the reason is that I never have enough time to get something together in a week unless it's an accident. I work in an operating room (long hours), am on call a lot, play in a band, blah, blah, blah Ginger. You get the idea. I too have decided not to enter any more challenges unless I have a good idea and a good photo to go along with it. However, that alone does not mean success. What I think is a great idea with photo to go along might not fit the DPC voters, but I will keep trying. |

Well, I'm going to carry on entering every challenge.
There are none I regret entering, although I do regret not having had my monitor calibrated for several of them!
Scoring badly does not make me feel bad about my pictures... and I can never predict which ones are going to do well. As I've said before in the forums, many of my favourite photos are some of my lowest scoring at DPC. If I only entered the ones where I thought I had a really really strong shot, I would try less photography I wasn't comfortable with... and get really upset as these photos would invariably score incredibly badly. |

Not me, I'm still working on as many as I can. I didn't enter the grace simply because I couldn't think of anything. As for the Still Life, I'm getting hammered down to the ground with each vote. But I don't care, I KNOW my shot is good and I know it's not going to appeal to everyone. You have to be careful if you say you are only going to enter if you have "killer" idea or shot because then you go in expecting SOOOOOOOOOo much and if it doesn't happen then you are once again disappointed. I know my shot is good, that is all that matters :)

If others like it, great, if they don't, OH WELL! :) |

the photo's entered in the challenges ought to be inspirational.
i wont enter a challenge if i dont have an idea i feel will
1) be unique
2) be able to ( have time to ) compose it properly
just snapping something to enter isnt a good philosphy in my opinion.
and its a waste of time for the voters.
althoughi try to enter them all - time and ideas equate to only about 1/2 of them.

Definitely a great idea. I don't really worry too much about my score any longer, but I do worry a lot about being "on topic" and submitting photos that I really like. If I can't fill both requirements I just don't enter.
Interestingly, the hardest part for me used to be meeting the challenge topic. Now the hardest part is getting a photo I am happy with.
Even when I feel I have managed both, and have a submission ready that seems to fit, I will still solicit the opinions of a few "in house" critics before entering. If they respond with blank stares... and they often do, then I am learning to reconsider :) |

I'm finding my shots I like most (My best work) are also the ones that seem to drop to the lowest scores.
The shots I question weather I should even bother entering, are my highest rated. Now what do I do? |

I too have decided not to enter any more challenges unless I have a good idea and a good photo to go along with it.
When I stated the above I did not mean that I was only going to submit killer photos. I meant that I wasn't going to submit just anything in order to have something to put in for the challenge. |

That's why I enter all of them! |
