The myth you linked is not about keeping your eyes open while sneezing. It's about your eyes popping out of your sockets if you keep them open, which they disproved. |

The longest German word actually used (not contrived) is Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz, which means "beef labeling regulation and delegation of supervision law".
PS: You can listen to me try to pronounce it here. I make no assurances about the quality of my German accent. :P

Regarding the Greeks (and hoping I am not wrong again), not only did they know it was round, Eratosthenes even estimated, in 205 BCE, the circumference to be 40,000km. (That's pretty close, by the way.) |
Yip he did it by measuring the shadow a stick left in two locations, then measured the distance between the two and the difference in degrees of the angle, then just completed the circle
