I'm usually of the "your score is what it is" philosophy, but I'm in the 5.5x range and I really, honestly don't understand it this time.

you know, i had this funky little feeling the night i entered my photo that was telling me 'yes katherine, this photo has the potentail to be in the top 100 at least, people will love it!'
well im going to kill the little feeling, cause its always wrong

You probably right... People would and will love it, but DPC will hate it. You see, most of us make the same mistake always. Regular people are not DPC... DPC has its own consciousness and mind that you have to obey a few rules to get something out of it. Rules, such as like "Eye candy", "Sharpness", "Focus" and "simplicity" all IN ONE.
Keep listening that little voice, you never know, it might get used to this environment and start giving you correct feelings for DPC standards ;) |

| Free studies are tough anyway. Because there is no particular challenge associated with the images, they have to stand on their own. They have to be a great image that doesn't need a challenge topic to help them score. I think that the voters also look at each image with a different eye. No longer are you looking for "does this fit the challenge" the first thing that you say is "is this a good image". In a normal contest, if an image fits the challenge you usually score it a bit higher than one that does not fit the challenge, even if the photo quality is equal. In the free study it is all about photo quality. That is why it is so hard to score well in them. |
