Very nice. I have been going back and forth between the Sigma 50 and 105 macro. Been having a tough time making up my mind.

Right now I am all for the 105. Sharpness seems to be equal to 50.

What was your working distance on that shot?

I don't remember exactly. The min focus distance is 12", but that is 12" from the film plane so the end of the lens was not too terribly far from the marbles... I had maybe 5" i suppose.... I'll check that out more closely in the future when I do some more test shots.

Whew! 5 inches is still tight. One of the reasons I was looking harder at the 105 was for a better working distance than the 50. But if it was 5 inches for the 105 you would have been bumpin' glass to get that shot with the 50.

Thx for the info. No need for more tests on my account. I was just looking for a "real world" approximation.

The 50 may offer better working distance... I don't remember for sure, but I don't think it's 1:1.

The 50mm also offers 1:1 magnification, but the minimum working distance (i.e. the distance for highest magnification) is about seven and a half inches, five inches less than the 105mm.

WOW that's close!
OK for those of us who won't be able to afford many lenses in the near future, is there any lens that offers something close in a macro and has other capabilities(telephoto and wide angle)?

What is the price on that macro anyway? $300?

I paid $359 for this one.

Remember the longer the focal length, the longer the working distance ( ie. lens to subject distance).

I bought my Sigma 105mm at pickacamera.com for $279. They do charge quite a bit for shipping (about $25 as I recall), but still have the best price I've seen. They're fast shippers, too!

Congrats on moving up to DSLR! Get ready to have lots of fun!
I have the Canon 100mm Macro and I am finding that I use it as my all around lens most of the time! Have you tried using your 105 for an all around lens? I thought I would only use my 100 for macros, but I had it on and took some regular shots with it. The sharpness and quality of the prime as compared to my Canon 70-200 L was awesome.
I love it for candid style portraits of my kids...

really great shots!
which were taken with the 100? Are any of those taken with the 70-200?
I am looking for a lens that can do macros and portraits.

Thanks JD... I don't know how much I will used the 105mm macro as a general purpose lens. It is an excellent lens and I intend to use it for a lot more than just macros, but it's field of view is too narrow for a lot of things. It will make an excellent portrait lens though :)
