what would you like for a souvenier? My German relatives are coming for a visit. They will be in NYC for a week then coming north to upstate to visit/meet the relatives. His mother has been here, but Matthias has never visited. All the typical New York things I'm sure he'll get while in NYC....what would be a good (low cost) gift for us to give him. (I don't have kids so don't really know what to do??!!)

Thanks for the ideas!

Take a good, non-geeky outdoor portrait of him.

Yup, then submit it to Kodak Picture of the Day to hopefully get picked, then take a picture of his picture on a billboard in Times Square and send it to him. Ya, it's a long shot, but would be a GREAT souvenir if it worked out!

Get him a good ol' fashioned New York style mugging. ;-)

New York, A stun gun might be useful. Or you could get him a "I traveled all the way to New York and all those people gave me was this lousy t-shirt" shirts. Not really sure what 12 year old boys are into these days besides 16 year old girls. My son is only 2. But I would say you couldn't go wrong with something that will remind him of New York later on in his life.

I'd say get them consumables. What kind of tasty treats are popular in your area?

If he's like most German boys, he loves soccer. Get him a New York Red Bulls soccer jersey. Find them here. Maybe check with his parents first to see if he's a sporty kid.

12 year old boy = a Yankee cap.

ahh...good ideas....
I don't know soccer so the soccer jersey is a good idea....the Yankee cap is good too.

exceptthe 'family' visit is UPSTATE...don't need a stun gun or a mugging! I'll let him get those things when he lands in NYC.

My village is known worldwide for the Herkimer Diamonds....may take him up to the mine. I know his Mom has some already but he may like going to bust rocks and find his own diamonds??

Take him to Ellis Island and show him where hundreds of thousands of his countrymen and women (and countryboys)landed in this country. Let him pick his own souvenir while he is there.

Thats a good idea, Show him where the America we know today got started. All of my grandparents passed through there back in the early 1900's.

thanks for the ideas everyone...

I do alot of geneology and one goal of mine for their visit is to ensure I am updated on the info...Ellis Island is far away from me (I'm about an hour north/west of Albany, closer to Syracuse)...but they will be starting and ending their trip in NYC....

I'd recommend asking your Ex-Govenor for some advice on this.........oh wait you said he was only 12. I'd go with a Yankee's game and then buy him a hat while you are there.

Hmmm, NW NY? I'm not sure how close you are, but he'd probably enjoy one of those boat rides up into Niagara Falls. I've never been, but I even saw on the Discovery Channel they have super-fast jet boats that take you up the rapids.

Those are pretty neat. I've seen them travel along the river, and man are they fast, and the passengers wet at the end of it. We were watching them from the top of the ridge, east of the falls (Canadian side) as they travelled into one of the whirlpools there. You could hear the passengers all the way down there screaming as the boat made its turns (screaming for joy of course).

One more question...(sorry for my ignorance)...

Can I assume he may have a PlayStation in Germany? or is that not available or not compatible.

More great ideas....THANK YOU...

We 'had' decided to get him a baseball glove and ball.....I can't believe I cannot find one that was made in the US! Rawlings gloves made in Vietnam/ Wilson gloves made in Phillipines, ALL baseballs are stamped CHINA...(well not a 'official MLB' one that is $20.00). I don't have a problem with them made in another country, but we were trying to get him a stereotypical American pasttime souvenier.....

the camera is a great idea.....only 'problem' is, most of his sightseeing will be done in NYC a whole week before we see them. So he'll just get pictures of us old relatives sitting around gawking at him.

That sort of thing was my first thought, too.

Problem is that the USA is different to nearly all the rest of the world in a number of things (like measurements and TV standards, to mention only two examples).

I'm no expert with this, but I have first hand experience with the problems of compatibility issues.
The US uses NTSC, most of the rest of the world uses PAL. Many modern DVD players can handle both, but I don't know about playstation.

Game boy games are different, too. We couldn't buy them for our girls to use in their Australian gizmos.

I still think it would be a great idea if you could get him something that is either much cheaper in the States, or perhaps released first over here - you'll just have to do the homework first. But gadgets/electronics are bound to be a hit!
