That's kind of how I feel. But the image is there to invert (quite easily, it seems, if you own a Mac) and I can't help but think that some voters might be inclined to look at the positive. A really impressive negative image that, when inverted, shows green skies and blue trees might somehow be deemed inferior to one that looks perfectly normal when inverted.
I don't have an opinion much either way -- my positive suffered some from the negative processing, and for whatever reason, so is my score. No comments, of course. |
I agree, we are judging the finished negative image we do not change images back and forth in any other challenge why would this be any differant. If you like the finished product vote accordingly, it's always interesting how people are always looking for the negative (no pun intended) rather than just voting with an open mind. It may be interesting to see some of the shots turned back positive but should not have any bearing on the vote, IMHO. |

Love6, we ALL want comments but forcing someone to leave a comment isn't the way to do it. People will enter spaces or 'n/a'. There just isn't a way to force someone to leave a constructive comment. They have to want to.
Do a search, you'll see many topics on this. Or post a new thread if you wish to ask more questions about DPC voting and commenting.
The best way to get comments is to contribute your own and hope to get them in return. Or, if you want, start a new thread after the challenge ends to ask for people to comment on your image and how they think you can improve. I will go leave a comment on one of your older submissions. |

why not vote first based on what you see in normal unlatered mode- and if you're curious about your top choices and how they would look inverrted... after the voting is over go and invert them? *pretty sure not everyone would do this but, its a suggestion?* |

As I look at it...
Challenge details: Be creative and take an image that works well as a negative. A negative image can be achieved through post-processing.
I took a bunch of pictures for this challenge, browsed through them and converted some to look at the results... I did not really like any of the pictures just by doing that so I googled some negative images, and tried again... I found some REALLY great shots, most of them taken with cameras that have the ability to take negative pictures BUT there were some that had been taken and post processed and the outcome was GREAT....
I took a picture that I liked, worked a bit with the colors and contrast until it looked similar to the shots I had liked AND converted - after I got the effects that I liked from the other shots I converted my picture and am sooo happy with the results....
After reading this thread though I have to say that if you convert my picture fex. you would get an image that is nothing like the picture straight from the camera... I did try to make it as nice as I could so the outcome would be something I liked... I actually did not understand the challenge description as you would have to take a picture that would look normal by converting it!!!
Well, my picture is scoring LOW and probably some of the low scores are because people don´t understand the effect BUT I have to say I think I have never done so much preparation for any challenge as this one - I really wanted my picture to come out nicely as I have never tried this before...
After reading this and tried this ctrl alt cmd 8 though - I wonder if the description should have said that the picture would have to look normal if you convert it but as it did not I will continue my voting without converting the pictures and just judge the outcome...
Just my 2 cents :o) |

I'm sure if the voters had the ability to see the untouched "originals" in every challenge they would do the same thing. Voters are always looking to find something wrong and almost always focus on the wrong things in their attempts to act as "experts". As a result, if you deviate from the cliche concepts of each challenge theme you almost always suffer for it in your score. The truly original and creative shots are to be had much further down the challenge results. This challenge isn't any different.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Dead on.

Ragga2000, you had it right - the objective is to have a picture that looks good as a negative. Don't sweat the score too much. Sounds like you enjoyed the process and learned a thing or two along the way, too. |

I try to focus on the positive aspects of an image (point out the positives, and then offer suggestions that I think might improve upon what the person already did (ie: if the sky is beautiful but distracting- try a crop without it and see if your image focuses more on the land-etc...) or add a border to keep your eye from drifting out... because overall I think everyone takes at least average or above average images- its hard to take a -bad- photograph in my opinion, even one that someone didn't 'process' in a way that some of us might think to process it, has its own features of beauty and original ideas to it- all in all? when giving feedback if its not alltogether positive- 100% I try to have some tact rather than just stating 'out of focus' - sure it takes me a few extra minutes, but in the long run... it lets the person know that i'm looking at the whole photograph not just staring at the part that is 'blury' - ie: putting my hand up and covering that part and looking at the rest of the image... see what the photographer saw when they submitted this 'finished' product... -- i'm by far not an expert...but I definatly try my best to pull myself from my own shoes- look over all the images as a whole, then as individuals... --would I convert images in a 'negative challenge'? when the challenge is over perhaps i'll get nosey on the top 10 unless the 'descritption' is really full and tells me tons that i don't want or need to- --after-- i've voted and set my mind and wont' change it based on what i see in 'converting' --- would I care if someone converted mine at this point? no- my score is so darn sad that people converting it will probably 'up' my score at this point...
there are so many amazing photographers on this one site-that it is a difficult task to judge them against eachother... I try to judge each individual piece -then go back with fresh eyes and up or lower my scores (more times than not its up) in negative form-there are a lot of creative wonderful images- its hard for me to guess who will get front page but I already picked some of my own personal faves :) hope they do well.. I haven't commented on many yet- but I did vote-and my votes are mostly all on the higher end, because the colors of a negative are just beautiful and creative- in afterthought it probably knocks my score down a bit more-but if i worried about that i wouldn't be being -fair- and i rather pride myself on detatching myself from this whole 'score' business ;) --mines already dead - me giving out a few more 10's isn't going to kill it anymore than all the 1's i'm sure i got :) ;) - onto the next challenge!! :) |
