Well, after hovering around 6 earlier in the week, my shot is looking to finish around 6.4, so I won't complain about this. :) I'm still happy to write critiques for others though.

Well mines well below a 6 so I'd be happy to receive some comments on my picture, and give some to others. Count me in.

Course it is. I might do the same.

The instructions said to post a link to our entry, so here it is.

This was taken during a recent climbing trip. I was not trying to achieve anything in particular it was just a shot while climbing. This is my friend bouldering (bouldering = climbing short heights without ropes) and I liked his position on the boulder. I guess it takes an understanding of the sport to really engage in this picture. I liked the trees and shadows in the image too. I may have gone a little too far with the contrast, but I sort of liked it at the time.

Thanks for your comments

I can post mine now too as it only scored 5.6575.

I was trying to get a nice close up of a real live bee while it was pollinating the almond blossoms here in CA. I do want to say this before I go to far, "I was using my 18-55 3.5-5.6 kit lens". So for those of you that wish I was closer; with this shot alone I'm only about 18 inches away from the bee. I really wouldn't have to get too much closer than that!

I thought to add a little oomph to this image I would try to capture the shot before the bee actually landed on the blossom. I was hoping for the uniqueness of a "flying shot" vs. just an ordinary "bee on flower" pose.

Was my lighting wrong, focus off, coloring not quite right, or is this just a par/average shot. Thanks for any comments. -BB

I just like this the way it is and don't really care how it finished.

In retrospect, I have no real complaints. Most of what's "wrong" with it, I wouldn't change one iota.

Okies here's mine:

I was disappointed to start with about the score but in hindsight it's about right.

I take people's comments about making the bee more prominent in the pic. The pic was quite heavily cropped as it was. I did consider cropping it more but it wasn't as sharp or as well defined at that magnification.

My effort. When I shot it, I was thinking of IreneM's fourth place shot in the February FS, but using the top of my car for a reflective surface. ;-)

Please tell me what the problem was. I seriously thought this one would have done well. I had a similiar image on another site that scored a 5.7.

Thanks!

Score 4.6

I got two comments about No point of interest. But these photos below scored 5.8 and higher in another challenge. I just want to know if the actual photo of mine is bad? usually a photo that scores a 4.6 isnt because of nothing interesting it's becacuse it sucks. And if it does. I'd like to know why.

This was my first real attempt at HDR using photoshop.

Anybody realize the exposure difference from the inside of a covered bridge to the BRIGHT a$$ snowy ground outside? I'll try to get around to posting the 5 originals if i can.

ETA:originals now on photo page

Well, I've left critique comments on everyone's image, including Chinabun. Pug-H got in before me on a few, so I had to try to write my comment before reading others. Mostly I agreed with other comments. If anyone has any feedback on my critiques, feel free to reply or PM me. ;)

Thanks, David - you left some really well thought out and detailed critiques! (I was following along behind you guys - and like you, I try to leave my initial comments first before I read others.)

To those who received David's critiques, it would be nice to go visit his portfolio and leave a few as well. :-)

They were all also in a "landscape" challenge. Yours was in a free study. IMO a free study is a notch higher than a regular challenge, therefore average pictures get a sub-par vote. (does that makes sense?)

Not really, I would figure that all challenges would get voted on the same way. A crap image gets a crap vote and vice versa. I'm not saying my image was a winner by any means. But a 4.6 is harsh, bad, crap...etc. Thats what i'm trying to figure out.

There is certainly truth to being harder to get high-score in a Free-Study. Free studies tend to be everyone's favourite shot of a whole month, and have no theme, so they have to stand-alone as a photo without any other purpose.

The other image you picked out aren't fantastic images either, but they do have good things going for them. The first one has a really nice blue sky and rich green grass. There's also used a couple of stands of trees as points of interest to anchor the composition. They have also made good use of depth in the photo, with the foreground grass sweeping back around the trees, making a nice S curve into the sky.

The second image has some nice almost impressionistic painting colours, nice curved lines to centre the image in itself, and again makes good use of the view point to allow the foreground to sweep through the image toward the background. The lake, the ferns, the sheep and the sunlight patches all help to break up the image and define points of interest at different depths.

The 3rd image is an interesting landscape texture. It is something new and different that people have not seen, so it has shown some creativity in the landscape challenge. It has a subtle diagonal line to it's composition, and with the interesting side-lighting of the texture, there are dark and light areas scattered around, but most of it's appeal is in it's originality with something that many people have not seen before.

Wow you know I kinda forgot to check this thread and I check here this morning and I have a load of INCREDIBLE comments ( surfdabbler - thanks so much!). So this is just one heck of an awesome thread and I appreciate it.

Here is my photo

I always hope for a 6+ lol but I want to try new things to when I enter a challenge. This time I just tried a tilted photo - that's all. And I cannot go back - I have to wait till vacation next year lol. There was no setup for this, I just saw the moment, pressed the button, and hoped something would work. :)

I'll be getting to comments later - today is the busy work day!

Thanks in advance to every one who comments.

Jeb, I liked your shot too! I gave it a 6 in voting. The only reason I didn't go higher is the darkness as some talked about. I played around with your shot for fun, hope you don't mind (I'll take it down if you do). This is what I came up with...

I've already gotten one comment that I should have cropped out the building on the left, but I thought the little bush in the corner was a nice touch. And I really didn't want to try to clone out all the stuff on the ground around it (which look fine in the context of the bush, but odd if the bush is cropped out.
I thought about cropping tighter on the right, but really like the contrast of the "dirty" and colorful building between the snow on the ground and the snow in the trees.

And no one seems to notice the barely seen outlines of buildings in the center "blank" area. I worked so hard adjusting levels and colors and contrast so that wouldn't be blown out. Of course, it may be more noticeable if I cropped in tighter as suggested, lol.

Oh, and cosprenks - when you are typing your post, it's the second button from the right (has 2 squares on it). Use you mouse (or the URL of the shot) to find out the code, and then type that in the window you get when you click on the button w/ the squares. Clear as mud?
