We have a new IKEA store opening locally today. I'm vaguely familiar with the company and the products, but I didn't realize the frenzy this opening would cause. There have been people camping out for two days to be first inside the 300,000 + sq. ft. store! They had entertainment set up starting at 6am this morning for people waiting outside. The entertainment included "Team Cincinnati" from the battle of the choirs show.
They have traffic alerts out for the area surrounding the store. This is crazy. If it was a photography store, maybe... |

Wow. Somebody in marketing did their job quite well I'd say!
Are they having some super low pricing on the first x number of people or something? We have IKEA here, and while I don't remember the grand opening at all, to go there now is "ok", it's a nice store, but camping out???
Sounds like a harsh environment to me! ;-) |

I've spent a half-day traveling to and from the Schaumburg (near Chicago) IKEA to shop, but I'd never camp out anywhere to have the privilege of shopping in any store, grand opening or not. |

I think they are giving away 100 lower priced chairs...worth about $80 each I think. They are giving some gift cards, but I don't know how many or how much. Actual sale prices I haven't seen anything for in the local paper. I think people just had cabin fever :) It is a beautiful morning here, so at least they have nice weather. |

Imagine the huge line they'd have if they gave instructional classes on how to assemble their stuff. :-) |

I don't get this...?
I have bought quite a lot from IKEA and most of the stuf can be assembled without actually referring to the instructions! Their products are excellent and are very well designed for home assembly.

The IKEA pictorial instructions are actually quite good. Try following the pictorial instructions for a Canon (9900) printer. Now there's an exercise that will drive you to drink. |

My apologies, I was just being facetious. I haven't bought anything from there in a few years that I needed to put together. They must've changed things a bit. |

The same thing happened when one opened in the Mpls area a few years back. I was as stumped by the human behavior then as I am now. |

The 'frenzy' as you call it is not a one weekend thing. I've lived near 2 Ikea Grand Openings and know that the frenzy doesn't let up until somewhere in the second month. Best time to go to Ikea, during the week when everyone else is at work. :) |

I wonder if it's the same people that line up for days to watch a Star Wars movie? ;-)
I couple of years back there was a huge crowd waiting for a Walmart to open for the Day After Thanksgiving sale. They had a DVD player advertised for $29.00.
A lady was almost trampled to death in the frenzy. When the dust settled, there she was, laying on the ground, nearly unconscious, clutching her $29 DVD player.
I think the regular price was $39.00

I love Ikea brought a bunch of stuff from them recently when I moved into my new apartment. And such a big crazy store I could imagine or understand people going crazy especially for all the special sales or events since its a new store opening.
lol yes the directions... my living room tables once out off the boxes drove me crazy at first pieces everywhere but I think the pictured directions were quite easy.

awww Ikea, man I miss them. I used to go to the one in Barrington (well close there anyway), Illinois just for the heck of it. The entertainment center we got there was very strong and even lasted a u-haul move to Colorado (fully assembled). I wish I could do my whole house in Ikea stuff...maybe now that there is one opening in Ohio it won't be too far from my home in KY. |

I believe that happened when they opened up the single Ikea here in the Dallas area. I don't get it myself. I've never been in the place. I don't like to fight crowds.

I never saw the appeal of Ikea ... it all looked like laminated pressboard furniture (exactly what it is) unlike other manufacturers that do their best to make RTA furniture that does not look like what it is. Maybe it's different now -- I haven't gone back to an Ikea since my first couple of walk-throughs back in the '90s, but I wasn't impressed then. |

I have several things from IKEA and not one is pressboard.
We have to travel to Vancouver and they have special buses on Saturdays. There was such a big rumour a few years ago about them opening here that they had to put an announcement on their website that they had no plans for the island in the foreseeable future.
I was sad :( |

we don't have ikea around here - have to go to canada. but a couple years ago they opened a Wendy's down the road from work, and for two weeks after they opened there was a traffic cop out in front directing traffic in and out of the parking lot.
the people at the Mcdonalds next door must have been scratching their heads...
now, if they would open a taco bell i'd understand the chaos.

That screw could be expensive and dangerous.
Look at what a screw cost Elliot Spitzer; $4400 and his career.

That's $4400 per unit item, I think. |

That's exactly what I do here at the only Portland area IKEA... it is crazy busy on the weekends and the closest one from here is in Seattle!! |

They were (no doubt are) the staple of students when I was in uni.... shared runs to the store with those that had wheels & loading huge things onto a little car :-)
I went for the first time in years a few months ago..... Not bad, although it's not long term solid wood type of stuff :-) |
