LOL!! You don't ever have bad shots so I'd say that's a pretty good bet. :-)

Is there anyone about who would be prepared to help me select a FS entry (on the usual proviso that they don't vote on it, of course)? - Oh, can you reply in here, because I am at work, on my luch, and can't pick up PMs til tonight.

If you can send it to me in the next 30 minutes, yep. Otherwise I'll be at work.

Yep, feel free to send it to me, too, Sara, my E-mail address is on my profile, or you can send me a link to the image (in your workshop) via a PM.

Best,

Bruce

Thanks, jelena and Rob - i'm not sure if my Pms have reached you as I don't know if the work server will let them through. Fingers crossed, but if not thanks for being prepared to help.

Hi gang, wanted to post this in TS thread one more time, as I am starting to get lots of interest and I think the slots will be filled within the next few days. (I've had about five people say they are going to sign up, but I haven't yet heard from my uncle whether it is a done deal or not - I am going to call him this morning to get the status.) Anyway, would love to have some suckers join in this fabulous trip, so here it is one more time:

Rare Yellowstone Park / Cody, Wyoming / Rodeo Opportunity
Aug 1-3 2008

This is truly a âchance of a lifetimeâ opportunity to photograph wildlife, geysers, incredible scenery, waterfalls and flora. My uncle Bob Richard, who owns and operates Grub Steak Tours, was the last horse ranger in Yellowstone Park and knows the park and surrounding area inside and out â his knowledge of history, geology, folklore and photography are unbelievable. His father, Jack Richard, was one of the best-known photojournalists of the west and Yellowstone, and Bob has followed in his footsteps.

I recently toured Yellowstone and Cody with him as part of a family vacation, and was so impressed that I asked him about putting a package together for DPC. He is generously offering his tours at ½ price. His recommendation is a three-day tour including Yellowstone, the North Fork of the Shoshone River between Cody, WY and the park (which Teddy Roosevelt called âthe most scenic 50 miles in the US), and Grand Teton.

I haven't processed most of my photos from my recent trip, but here is a small sampling:

The itinerary is as follows:

July 31 â Thursday: Arrive in Cody, WY (there are direct flights from Denver, CO). As Bob has generously offered me the use of one of his vehicles, I can pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel in downtown Cody. We can assist with hotel arrangements. Bob recommends The Americana Hotel, around $150 per night.

Aug 1 â Friday: 1st Day Tour of Yellowstone Park. Lunch is provided.

Aug 2 â Saturday:
2nd Day Tour of Yellowstone Park. Lunch is provided. Attend Cody Night Rodeo, the longest running rodeo in the United States, having operated for over 60 years. Many of the nation's greatest cowboys started their rodeo careers in Cody. Tickets are $17.00 each for adults. The rodeo begins at 8:00 PM.

Aug 3 â Sunday: Tour Grand Teton. Lunch is provided. Those needing to return home can do so.

Aug 4 â Monday: Return home.

Bob knows the places we are most likely to encounter mammals living in Yellowstone, big and small. When I toured with him this winter I saw wolves, bighorn sheep, bison (American buffalo), coyotes, snowshoe hares, trumpeter swans, eagles (both bald and golden), elk and a variety of other smaller mammals and birds. Moreover, Bob knew how to safely get me close enough to photograph them!

The price of this package is $225 per person or couple per day (there is a small surcharge for meals for couples). Bobâs usual rate is $450 per day.

Bob would like to limit this opportunity to six photographers, so it is first come, first serve. Further information on the company: //www.grubsteaktours.com. Please PM me for further info or post here.

Please note: I'm going to be in in Cody for both a few weeks before and after the tour, so anyone who wants to stay longer could likely get in on some great free hikes as well!

I might get a few shots of weathered old barns tomorrow on my trip into Iowa. Any TS types near West Union?
02/29/2008 04:10:14 PM · #388
Well......I have a completely different effort for the Free Study. It'll probably get killed, but.......

"I really love my shot!"

I feel that way about my B&W in Color, and I'm getting thrashed for it......screw 'em, I like it.

And for the first time in a REEEEEEEEEEALLY long time, I have entered three challenges simultaneously.

Jeb! I know that feeling well. My B&W is the pits scorewise. In fact all last half a dozen entries have been the same.

My shots are no worse than normal, in fact some are better. Why this low voting all of a sudden??
02/29/2008 04:33:35 PM · #390
I think we have a crop of new users who are very very literal. Give 'em time. As they get their feet wet and start looking at more images, they'll widen their views a bit. I think everyone (except the Chosen Ones) is getting a lot of low votes lately.

I hate to sound this way.....but some of the comments that I get, when I look at the profile pages, I have to laugh.

I get comments on what to do to "fix" my image from someone with 4s in their "Top 5".......I don't let it bother me too much.

'Course I don't worry too much if someone who I respect and admire tells me not to quit my day job, either......8>)

It is what it is.......some people I reach, most I don't.

So be it!

My b&w is running around 4.2 but it's brilliant and I've had some great comments (in addition to direct and indirect dnmcs)
02/29/2008 06:45:20 PM · #393
I'm in for Free Study with a shot I really, really like - but likely won't merit higher than a 5 here. Might be a bit of a painful week. :)

Pets is holding steady around 4.6
02/29/2008 07:14:09 PM · #394
I've got a 6.4 going in B/w in Color and a 5.5 in Pets. My free study is in and I really like it but I'm predicting somewhere around a 5.

Umm, noraneko...isn't that 'Grub Stake Tours' as opposed to 'Grub Steak'? the latter brings to mind a T-bone coated with maggots...whilst pointy wooden sticks useful for impaling vampires and to lay claim to tland for mining etc were referred to I believe as grub stakes....

BTW anyone want a peek at my Led Zep shot, obviously no vote...pm me by 10 pm if interested...

If anyone can spare some "back to work soon" thoughts, we could sure use them now.

Hubby walked in the door this afternoon, and announced that he was laid off (AGAIN !) - indefinitely this time.

*sigh*

instant employment mojo coming your way, lea. good luck!

the shoot went really well, the clients were very happy, said it was the most fun they'd ever had doing promo stuff. i'm pretty happy with the results, except for the fact that i didn't notice a kleenex sticking out of her pocket, so i have that to clone out in about 8 shots. dunh. o yeah, i'm a pro...
02/29/2008 09:45:12 PM · #398
Lea, I'm sending you and hubby back to work intent right now...hope it helps...:-)

Lol Christian at having to do some cloning, but at least the shoot was fun! Now you know in future to check your sitters over before shooting...or have them check selves/each other?...

Good luck Lea! Get back to work soon Lea's husband! LOL!

I never heard back from the wedding photographer, so I guess he went with someone who actually had the equipment he wanted them to have.

I have nothing for FS, it's been a pretty dry month as far as pictures go. I have a "model" set up for tomorrow night for Led Zepplin. This should be fun!

On the down side, I shot a friend of a friend today for cheap. I only charged her a $25 sitting fee, for which she gets 640x480 "proofs" emailed to her. Any prints will be worth my while in fees. The problem is, she wanted glamour shots (to make her pretty), yet she refused to smile, she looks downright grumpy in every picture. She wants her acne gone, some weight lost and the stains removed from her tank top. Yeah, it wasn't fun. She also wanted just a head shot for an alumni page with all of the above done to that one too (she says she'll never see the people in person again, so they don't need to know how bad she looks now). So, I have 45 very badly posed, angry looking photo's that I'm not sure I can make look even remotely good. I'm contemplating giving her the $25 back.
02/29/2008 09:54:06 PM · #400
It's always tough doing favours for friends...you did your best and sadly she chose to not make the most of it. I feel bad for you but I'd keep the $25 just on principle...you still had to set up, lights, shoot then do pp. Why do it for free? If she's unhappy with the results, well, just point out you're a photographer, not an illusionist.

Good luck!
