I agree that I could have "saved" ultimately. That sentence now sounds even better to me without it.
However, I could not avoid noticing the paradox created by this word in this context tough. In fact, I continued writing about the (immense) difficulty to express ourselves and then, the wrong sounded presence of "ultimately" was wrong and right at the same time, demonstrating such difficulty.

You do very well to question that. In fact, I didn't even try to explain what I meant by "expressing ourselves".
My expressive limits fail me, because I find it difficult to resume all the many and different constrains, rules, chains and bindings which I, wrong once again, resumed with the word "limits" that make it so difficult for people to express themselves.

Is any image a 'failure' if it has the desired effect on only a small number of people?

Are there not numerous artists - in visual arts, and even music -- who have small, passionate followings?

For example, does it make Miles Davis any less outstanding that the majority of people do not listen to his work?

Of course not.

An old battlefield, glimpses...

And I failed to acknowledge a point you made regarding a deficiency between knowledge and essence, which I support. ;-)

So, my purpose can't be to create art for others.

Lol, this one is even fuzzier, John.

Let's see....

Everyone won't share my same opinion on what is and isn't art. Similarly, I wouldn't share everyone elses opinion either. With this in mind, I can't expect everyone to think something I do is 'art'. Some will and some won't.

To paraphrase very badly: "Art is in the eye of the beholder".

My taste in art and photography may be very different to other people on this site, that does not make my vote and opinion any less valid. At some point people may realise that everyone is entitled to their own opinion whether or not it agrees with others.

Mmm... I was going to completely agree with that sentence John, however I can see why Zeuszen judges it fuzzier.
It opens up for at least one other completely different digression: can we define our "artistic" purpose or is it assigned to us?

Damn.. we are getting so chaotic (read it as "far from logic") when it comes to Art...

Coming back to logic, it is perfectly possible that:

- somebody who disagrees with you, finds your work artistic
- somebody who agrees with you, does not find your work artistic
- somebody who disagrees with you, does not find your work artistic
- somebody who agrees with you, finds your work artistic (in which case you should marry her). ;)

I am on a 4.7 at the moment, and this is my highest score so far. I have to say that actually I am thrilled. LOL. But at the end of the day, what one person views as "art" the other doesn't. It would be a very boring world if we all agreed on the same thing all the time.

I say just have fun with it, forget about whether you win or lose. We are all here to learn and enjoy this fantastic past time. Have a great day.

The flip side of this is that, while not everyone will agree with you on what is art or not, just because people dislike your pictures, doesn't mean they are art. My sig seems somehow apt for a change.

Mmmmm... Sagan wanted to say something cool, but he could have said it better.. after all Bozo the Clown was doing his job (the Clown) pretty well if people were laughing at him so he probably was a genius.
