In this Dodge and Burn Tutorial it says "Create a 50% grey layer. Do this by holding down the Alt key and click on the ‘Create a new layer icon' at the bottom of you layers palette." That's for Photoshop... does anyone know how to create the equivalent type of layer in PSP X2? I can make my way to all the adjustment layers, but these other types of layers are still new to me.
Thanks! |

Right click on the Layers palette and choose New Raster Layer...
In the Materials Palette just below the Colors you will see a bar that ranges from black to white. The middle gray is 50% (r:128 g:128 b:128). Left Click on that middle gray.
Use Flood Fill tool to paint the layer gray.

Ok, I've made the layer, selected soft light, filled it with 50% grey, like the tutorial, but when I try to dodge or burn on it, nothing happens... is there something I'm missing or something else I should be doing? |

Make sure to set the 50% gray layer to Overlay blend mode and that you have set your brushes back to black and white (click the little Half black/Half White icon and your foreground color goes to black and background color to white).
Left Mouse Click will burn (black on the gray layer) and right Mouse Click will dodge (white on the gray layer).
Many will create two 50% Gray overlay layers like this and Burn on one and dodge on the other so if they goof badly burning they don't lose their dodging or vice versa.
ED: Typos, Spelling the usual.
Also just noticed you said the tut says soft light... I have always used overlay, never tried soft light for D and B. Ok, just tried it and it Soft Light blend is less agressive than Overlay mode.

Thanks again... I upped my opacity so I could see if it was working or not and that helped. I'll play around with the settings some more tonight. |
