Looks like my youngest son (26 so that shows how old I am) will be coming along with me. I welcome the company for my explorations down there and now I'll have a sherpa!

Updating the latest info - and a reminder to reserve your rooms even if you are not sure you can go. There are a limited amount of rooms and the places fill. The rooms are no longer on hold! It's 1st come, 1st served with the general public now.

Interested:
Nald, dsidwell, LanceW Some, dacrazyrn, PSUlion01 Zeuss and SkylerCall maybe.

Reservations made: nikolai1024, yakatme maybe, dwterry maybe, jbsmithana and son, rjkstesch and hubby, Agaricus, and Chad Smith and wife

Wowwy - Zowwy! We have an inexpensive place to stay in Torrey, Utah, for our Capitol Reef leg of our GTG

We'll be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey. It is an older, small, motel with well rated food at the cafe and very nice reviews on the rooms. The rooms go for $44/night + taxes for 1 person, and $48/night + taxes for 2 people. Most rooms have 2 beds.

They have only 10 rooms and are holding them for us until the end of January. Make your reservation on the web site under Motel, and then Motel Rooms. You need to give a credit card number, but it will not be charged until the day of check in. We will be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey on April 17 & 18.

We have a place to stay in Moab for a very reasonable price($54.95/night + tax) (and with good reviews). It's the Inca Inn. We have 10 rooms being held for us until the end of January. After that, you're on your own. Use the registration form on the web site (no one is at the Inn right now), and include that you are with the Tesch group on April 19 - 22. You'll have to give a credit card number, but it is not charged unless you do a no show.

So, make your reservations for Moab and Torrey, right now(even if you're not sure you can go)! Cancelling is much easier than getting reservations later on.

Hey all,

Still thinking of attending this, but sorting through logistics. Is everyone renting cars, or are people pairing up? If anyone is looking to split something like a car rental pls shoot me a message or leave a post here.

Thanks,
Mike

I guess I'm out, I spent 3 weeks there last month and it has taken the wind out of my sails to go back. That and my wife wants to go to the Keys for the Conch Republic Independence Celebration that week!

Hope you guys have a great time!

Just a bump to see if anyone had thoughts on the car rental thing?

Thanks!

I can understand it, but it doesn't mean I like it. John, you were our example of how to get shots from the top of a cliff. ;-)

Hey guys,

I'm going to have to sit this one out as well. I'm really bummed; but I just have way too much going on at work and in the family life (with the new little one) to be taking any more precious time away from home. I'm really sorry, and I hope you guys all have a fantastic time!

Steve

There is going to be a Full Moon on April 20th while we are at Arches. I would love to shoot it coming up through Delicate Arch if it is possible. I did a little internet searching but was unable to find info on the Moonrise time and / or location on the hoizon at Arches that time of the year.

Can anyone help?

Never mind. I think I found it, used my GPS. Moonrise is 9:44 PM slightly north of true east.

Can I get a ride from Salt Lake City and back with anyone?

It seems that plane tickets are cheaper if I fly there.

I had seen that we'd be experiencing the full moon while we're in Moab. Were you able to figure out if that shot is possible? Were you able to find out when the moon sets. There are some wonderful scenes toward the west that would look great with a full moon.

In case anyone is interested here is the guide I put together for the 2006 GTG(OMG it's been that long ago)for Arches.

Disclaimer: I am no expert on shooting in Arches. If you have more knowledge about shooting here please forward me your ideas and I will add them. I am only trying to put together a guide for everyone on the outing to use.

On Sunday you can choose to spend the day in Arches National Park.

//www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm
Download Arches Visitor Guide 1.2mb PDF

There are many wonderful places to shoot in Arches and there is no way to do everything in one day. I wanted to put together this guide so everyone can spend the day shooting as they wish or form smaller groups to spend the day together. We should meet for lunch and reform for the afternoon. We should have an early dinner in order to regroup for an evening outing.

The entrance fee is (and donĂ¢€™t quote me on this) $10.00 for 7 days, we may be going to multiple parks, so you may want to buy the $50.00 annual national park pass.

Bring polarizer filters!
Stay on the trails and off the cryptogamic soil, you will see signs
Bring water, food, good shoes, first aid kit, and a hat
Don't forget the sun screen

May temps
Average High 82
Average Low 51
Extreme High 105
Extreme Low 33

Updated for 4/20/2008

It looks to me that I may be out of this. My grandmother passed away a week and a half ago. Just got baack from the funeral in San Antonio (18+ hour drive without problems), and will be making a trip down again in April to finish work on emptying and fixing up the house to sell.

Ya, I'm still trying to sort everything out, but I really hope I'll be able to attend.

Nikolai: We met at a DPC G2G in NYC about a year ago... It was when Skip Rowland came into town. Assuming I can get all this stuff cleared through the wife, maybe we should try to sync up our travel schedules. Are you flying out of LGA, JFK, or EWR?

Yep. I remember you.

I'll be flying out of JFK. Maybe LGA if prices is much cheaper.

It's been several weeks since we've brought this thread up.

I must admit that I'm starting to get antsy for this GTG. The sun has been out. The flowers are starting to bud, and the clouds have been wonderful. Spring is a great time in the red rocks.

There is a wonderful dirt road that heads through some very unusual country near Goblin Valley. If the weather is good, and we have at least 2 vehicles with 4-wheel drive, we'll be taking that road on the way to Moab from Capitol Reef. Greg and I have a 4 wheel drive. Does anyone else? Are you interested in a day of dirt roads? and interesting sights?

I'm bringing our Prius so no 4 wheel this time. How dirt is the dirt road. Any chance I can drive it in the Prius? I've driven over the moutnains between Arizona and New Mexico in a 2 wheel drive before but it was a fairly calm gravel / dirt road.

And yes, I'm getting excited about the trip, can't wait!

Well, sorry to say... I'm bowing out. I'll miss Moab this year. But ... as a consolation prize, I just booked airfare to Brazil. Yeehaw!!! :-)

There is a sandy section. The guide said it can be traveled in a high clearance 2 wheel. Does the Prius qualify?

You just got yourself on the menu of a Brazilian meat restaurant. :-) Take us with you and we'll change to Brazil, too.
