Everyday Photo Hobbyists Take Note:
A new, very informal and easy going photography contest site was launched about one month ago. It's called "Shutterpond" and can be found at: //www.shutterpond.com/photo-contests. Registration is required but completely free. This brand new site is in its infancy so the developers have plenty of work ahead of them as they strive to get "Shutterpond" up to muster.
Shutterpond should not be compared to DPC.
SPECIAL NOTE - Remember the old adage "If you can't say something good about someone don't say anything at all." Give Shutterpond developers a chance to make a go of it before you let loose the hounds.
Here is a copy of their "About" page.
Shutterpond is a new social community built for people around the world who share the same passion for photography as we do. Whether you are shooting with a brand new Digital SLR or snapping with a recycleable camera from your corner store, a breathtaking picture can be taken anytime or anywhere. Come share it with us!
We offer a series of photo contests every month with prizes that range from cash, to brand new digital cameras. It doesn't matter if you are a professional photographer or just starting out, submit your photos into our competitions and see what other people think of your work. Having your photography on Shutterpond is also a great way to get exposure!
Looking for information on the latest digital cameras? Or maybe you have some questions about certain photography techniques? Ask the other members on our community message board for help! Our message board is full of photographers of all skill levels that can answer questions, give advice, or just take part in friendly conversation.

personally I think it's in pretty poor taste to advertise other photo competition sites here ... DPC is the best ... and always will be ... |

Sites advertise all the time... some are up front about it, like this post and some the recruiting will go behind the scense with private messages inviting a person to check it out. If DPC really is the best, they have nothing to worry about in losing members. Most people have a half dozen or more photo sites they visit regulary. I personally don't see anything wrong with it, when done with consideration. But then the powers might see it different.
I did look at the site... at least as much as I could without registering. I like to be able to see at least some of what is being posted before I register with a site. With this site, you can't see anything other than their main page. I also like to know where a site is based out of and a bit about the person or persons that created it. They promise cash money prizes and hardware, so is that coming out of their pockets or do they have sponsors already that are paying for it? What is the fine print on images submitted to the contest? Does entering give them the right to use the image for anything they want? I've seen sites in the past that were basically a stock photo agency and when you posted your image on the site, you gave them permission to use your image...this is how they got a lot of free photos to use without having to pay for their use. Some denied this was what they were doing while others were up front about it.
But there are a lot of reasons I join a site (contests and a possibility of a ribbon or even money is not the top of my list either). From what I was able to see, there wasn't enough to get me to even register to see more.
Mike

Interesting. The developer of said site was here earlier in the week and took a good humoring from the DPC peanut gallery.
EXCEPT, I can't find the thread... Oh well.

It might be a nice alternative venue if you can submit photos taken at any time. I frequently have a good shot that I can't use because it was taken a week before the submission period. |

Hey, I followed a side-bar ad one day about 14 months ago now to a place called PhotoBlog. They don't have contests. It's just an informal place to post daily photos to chronicle my life pictorially rather than with a lot of words. That sight has been good for me, especially by way of triage.
Some weeks my ego gets "bloodied" pretty badly here at DPC, like with a recent DQ (which is not nearly as tasty as the ice cream shop.) Invariably, I will have my wounds salved to some degree by the kind souls at PhotoBlog. Then, once again I'm fit to "get back into the ring" at DPC.
Ya know, Shakespeare was brilliant when I wrote the line, "Thou protesteth too loudly!" Fear & anger appear to bespeak uncertainty of strength equal to or greater than one's opponents. Maybe that's the reason Langdon doesn't need to speak to this issue. He knows, like the rest of us do, that DPC is the best!
By the way, that too is the reason God appears silent to most folks. He's not worried! :} (Blink! Blink! Humorous tip-of-the-hat greetings to all my sparring partner/fans out there! I'm teasing, not goading! Whew!) :}

Quote from a forum on canadianphotoclub.com:
"This site is not protecting people's uploaded photos, they currently allow file uploads to a Max file size of 2mb so people not knowing any different upload a fairly high res version of there picture which wouldn't be a problem if they would hide the page source or something but the link to the original file is in the page source and anyone can grab you pic and do what they wish"
I wouldn't join, they don't even have an address or contact person listed. |

I don't think DPC has anything to worry about.
I have a friend who rencently set up a new photo site called Phototopix.co.uk
I am actually a moderator on there, though I have not visited it in WEEKS! Why? Because I don't feel it is as good as DPC. I much prefer the layout, setup and environment here and have found it difficult to spend time on other photo sites, when I could be spending that time on DPC... |

I have to say if it wasn't for someone doing exactly that. I would have never heard of DPC.

Uhh..in actual fact I just managed to login (shocking interface!) - my 2p - DO NOT BOTHER!!
Voting is thumbs up or down, there were 400+ entries and of the two pages I looked at most were fuzzy baby pictures. Really, save yourself the effort, the spam and the time. Plus I'm wildly paranoid about a number of those sites (a) capturing email and (b) having sneaky clauses owning image rights (i.e. image harvesting).
Looking anywhere else other than here was a mistake...won't do that again...!

Hmmm file size apart, uploaded images are not protected here. And with new resizing software availability like this , that may not be a good thing. |

Heh... a novel idea I guess, but if your looking to learn something about photography (even as a newb) there is no real replacement for DPC. This isn't just loyalty talking either, between dpreview and dpchallenge I came from not ever owning a camera 3-4 years ago to having two cameras a few lenses and a great deal of knowledge about photography.
So I guess... when you think about it... it's DPC's fault that I spent all that money!

Thanks for the question. Yes, I have registered and as a retired IT Business Professional/Logistician I've conversed with the co-founder, Joey Lomanto about their sites functionality.

i think your only using your username and not your email addy.
i believe it's an automatic function to kick you back if it thinks you are not registered.
