It's good to see you all get your reservations. The Inca Inn has a room with 3 double beds that could allow a group of people to share the costs of a room and still have their own bed - just ask for it - they only have one. Other rooms are either King, 2 Queens, or 2 Doubles. Some have tub and showers, some have only showers.

Make your reservations, even if you are not sure you can attend. It's easy to cancel, but hard to get rooms late on. Use the internet reservation form.

WCPilot, we are sorry to hear that it will be too tight to have you with us.

David, I'm hoping you can join us.

Robert, A glimmer of hope is better than none. This is such your type of trip!

Wowwy - Zowwy! We have an inexpensive place to stay in Torrey, Utah, for our Capitol Reef leg of our GTG

We'll be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey. It is an older, small, motel with well rated food at the cafe and very nice reviews on the rooms. The rooms go for $44/night + taxes for 1 person, and $48/night + taxes for 2 people. Most rooms have 2 beds.

They have only 10 rooms and are holding them for us until the end of January. Make your reservation on the web site under Motel, and then Motel Rooms. You need to give a credit card number, but it will not be charged until the day of check in. We will be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey on April 17 & 18.

If you haven't gotten your reservation for the Inca Inn in Moab, make that reservation too. Both places have few rooms, and nice prices (especially compared to other places in the areas.) You can cancel with no charge at both places.

Thanks Becky, for all of your research and work towards making this a good GTG. I just made my reservation at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe.

Thanks for the update Becky. Corrected my reservation for Moab (I was going to get there early) and switched those days to Torrey. Got a little ahead of myself.

Just to be sure; we are staying at the Capital Reef Inn two nights, the 17th and 18th. Then leaving for Moab the morning of the 19th and staying at the Inca Inn on the 19th, 20th, 21st and checking out on the 22nd. Is that correct? Sorry for my confusion but I want to make sure I have the right days locked in with them.

Can't wait!

You are exactly right! Capitol Reef Inn for April 17 & 18. Leave early on the 19th and stay in Moab at the Inca in on April 19, 20, 21 and leave on the 22nd. See the 1st post for the day by day itinerary.

Just a quick note to let others know we have decided on places to stay, and the rooms are being held until the end of January. Reservations can be cancelled without a penalty, so if you think you might be going, make reservations.

Just a quick reminder that the motel rooms are only being held until the end of January.

Now is the time to make reservations if you could possibly come. No charges will be made until mid-April.

The links are in the 1st post of this thread.

Hmmm, seriously considering this. Dang, dang, dang....actually was considering Northern CA around that time of year, but might forego that for a Utah GTG/Roadtrip. Need to think about this, dang, dang, dang. Always wanted to photograph that part of the country and GTG's are the bomb!!!

It's a great part of the country and a fantastic place to get original photos like this,,,

Going to places like this with the DPC crowd is a lot of fun and a learning experience.

Beautiful, simply beautiful. What is the weather like down there that time of year?

It is only 16+ hours south of me...just over 1,000 miles through Boise, down through Salt Lake...that would be an amazing trip and time I am sure...

The weather was fantastic last year, the only year that I have gone so far. No rain, the nights are cool, down to about 45 - 50 degrees and the days a bit warm at about 80 - 85 degrees if I remember right. Any closer to summer and I understand that it is incrediblly hot. In April we hiked through the desert to The Wave (the shot I posted) and it was a little hot on the way back but really not bad at all.

edit to add... Check out my portfolio folder on the last GTG there ---->Red Rock GTG 2007

I remember seeing your Horshoe Bend photo after you posted it originally. Thought it was quite amazing as well.

45 to 50 is spring to me, 80 to 85 is a summer...love it when it is hot though...your making this decision a bit easier for sure...

You don't happen to have the GPS coordinates for that hike do you?

Michael - you should come on down. I'm going but will be including it in a longer trip that backtracks over to Zion which I did not get to spend much time in last time I went down. I'm also likley to come back through the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone if the raod is open by then.

Hey JB

I am seriously thinking of coming down, leaving here on the 15th, that would give me a couple days drive time, getting to Torrey on the 16th (I can easily do 500+ a day), then heading back north on the 23rd/24th time frame. Wouldn't need to be back to work until Monday the 28th...

No, I don't. And none of us who went on that day had a GPS with us. You could (and should) look it up before you go. I added "should" because there are restrictions on the number of visitors allowed there each day.

As I understand it, the Park Service allows only 20 hikers per day to visit The Wave. The advance passes for the year are snapped up immediately after midnight on the day that they become available. The advance passes are for 10 hikers per day and the remaining 10 hikers can get passes by showing up the day before they intend to visit The Wave, first come, first served. We didn't have advance passes and Becky went to get our passes the day before. She was only able to get passes for half of our group...it's that competitive.

We won't be going by the Wave this time around, but if you interested in the coordinates, here's a link to the map with coordinates. //www.zionnational-park.com/map-paria-canyon.htm
The Wave
36°59.7386N
112°00.3583W
Elevation: 5200'
Distance from parking lot: 2.75 miles

This area is at the base of Utah, on the Arizona border. We'll be closer to the eastern center of Utah. It is absolutely gorgeous there too.

Becky

Edited to add the GPS coordinates of the Wave. It is a part of the North Coyote Butte area. Robert is right about the difficulty to get tickets. However, advanced tickets (10 per day) are given out in an on-line lottery. You have a month to sign up for the lottery ($5 fee), and announcements are made on the 1st of the month for the month which is 3 months away.

Thanks Robert and Becky. I plan on going down that way after our GTG and do a couple of things I missed my last time down. I'll look into the advance passes or shoot for the day before type. It may not be bad for me as I will be alone.

Welcome Michael,

We are going to have one heck of a good time.

Thanks Rebecca,

If this GTG is anything like the last two I have been on, it will be a blast. Good people, good scenery, new places to explore, what more could one ask for? Oh yea, good weather, food, road conditions, pit stops, no flat tires, car problems, etc. etc. etc :-)

Looking forward to it very much...been many years since I have been to Utah and from what I remember it was beautiful...

Still spots available for this? If so, which airport is best to fly into? Also, what are the odds of getting to visit the wave (on such short notice)?

Thx

Yep! There are still spots. The only restriction to the number of spots is getting a room. They are holding them right now, but are scheduled to let the rooms go to the general public on Monday. Go to the 1st post and and make reservations for both places on the links (assuming you are attending all the days), Capitol Reef Inn and Inca Inn. Both have reservation forms on their sites.

You'll want to fly in to Salt Lake, or possibly Denver. Las Vegas is not an awful distance either.

We won't be close to the Wave, but if you make it a side trip you can give it a try. Last year during April, there were about 30 - 50 people trying for 10 spots each day throughout the months. It's a lottery system that requires you to be at the Ranger Station the day before the permit date.

We'd love to have you along.
