So this forum is a solid community and it seems very dedicated to helping each other, teaching each other, and learning new things. I would make the statement that if you don't continue to always learn new things as a photographer, then you are probably not trying hard enough. I was curious to hear what new things people have learned recently, whether it be technical information, or a new trick.

For example, a student of mine brought in a peep hole from a door and held in front of the lens of his point and shoot camera. We zoomed in, clicked and got a pretty cool image. Pretty much like a poor mans fish eye lens. I'll post the result, but I don't have the file on this computer.

I've also been doing a bit of research and found out about digital pinhole photography (I've built shoebox cameras before). I'd like to do it, but I'm really nervous about dust on my sensor.

And lastly I found this group on flickr dedicated to taking pictures with cameras suspended from kite string. Cool.

so...
What have YOU learned lately?

that gaining weight is easier than losing it?
OH about photography....
--Taking the pictures is more fun than marketing them, and if you do market them you need to be careful not to lose focus and undersell yourself.
--Big lens are hard to pay for but worth every penny
-- I also have been trying to learn more about masks in PS and am still fairly hopeless at it, so still learning.

-Curves is the most powerful adjustment tool at my disposal. (Still working on the total mastery of it, though)
-How to more effectively use sharpening.
-The time you choose to leave the camera bag in the car is the time when your battery will run out, or your memory card will fill up.
-I am now seeing the world through a viewfinder. Every thing gets mentally composed as a photo and I've found interesting shots in a number of places that I used to go right past.
-A triptych, even of consecutive actions, is not the same thing as a time lapse.

Had a good though exhausting experience yesterday photography a conference for a friend of mine at the college where she teaches. It was a blast to be able to take pictures of people without worrying about asking there permission! And what did I learn....that I can do this reasonably well. Of course that's what I think. First I have to wade through the 568 shots I took to see if any of them were as good as I thought. I suspect I will be deleting a lot but if I end with 200 or so, I'll be more than happy. I'll get back to as to what the 'clients' think. Think I'll try stringing as a second/third on a wedding next. Any takers in the Philly Area? LOL!

That shouldn't be any surprise. I say that from having looked at your portfolio and challenge entries. :-) Best of luck to you on making the business potential on this work.

-Photography is an expenxsive hobby
-RAW is better than JPEG
-Canon EOS 5D is the 3rd best DSLR on the planet (following only the 1DsMKIII and 1DMKIII)
-Most people have to much stuff in their bag
-Hangman is a stupid game
-Green Bay is gonna beat Seattle or vice versa (same logic applies to the other 6 teams)

I agree!

I agree even more!

...and Canon EOS 40D is the 4th best DSLR on the planet (and possibly the universe)

I disagree...it's just that my bag is too small ;-)

I would have use a stronger adjective

...and Indianapolis will make it two in a row.

Working with a fixed focal length lens (i.e. prime) helps you 'see' better.

I learned to only use one strong light directly on the face for a portrait. If you want to light up the shadows, use a reflector (I guess) or a much weaker light. Some people (like Louis use a light behind the subject. I'll give that a try.

I learned how to write a proper business plan (well still learning actually)

I learned retail space is expensive, but worth it (more details to follow in the next month or so)

I learned marketing is my best friend.

I learned there aren't enough hours in a day. :)

I learned that challenges are like tequila, they're both better with salt.

Look at you! You go girl!

Before you know it, instead of a "Miami Ink" reality business show, their will be a "J'Ville Penrod" show! ;-)

Good luck!

I learned that it's easier to set white balance before shooting than try to fix it in Photoshop. Auto white balance is not always your friend!

I have learned that there are some (actually a lot) of fantastic photographers and artists on this site.
I have learned that I need to/will learn alot from being here. Sooo looking forward to it.....

I learned over the last year or so that DPC is the most incredible community of photographers that are willing to share their opinions and expertise on the Internet.

I learned some new tricks lately (In the last couple of days) that are really cool to me and that I will share here soon but it is coming up to midnight here in Belgium.

You can always go through my portfolio and suggest what I have and have not learned ...

Unless you shoot in RAW, then it is one of the easiest post-processing steps you can do, IMHO. :-)

Er - excuse me - cheese (even yer wretched Edam) + pesto + sun dried tomatoes (chopped) between two slices of bread, on a plate, cover with a bowl, a minute or two in the microwave.

Yes it is nice.
