In my opinion, when you open up a paragraph with that type of sentence the whole thing becomes insulting and not "insightfull and helpfull"

Help me out here- what is insulting about it ? Why would the general voting public want to see badly taken snapshots of kids and pets ?

It doesn't say all kid and pet shots are badly taken snapshots - so that isn't the insult. It doesn't say your kids or pets are ugly. If you don't enter bad snapshots, you can't take offense, and if you do - then the question stands - why do you think people want to see them ?

Because the "bad snapshots" aren't just that to the people who post them.
and your definition of snapshot isn't necc. the same as others which has been stated already.
Alot of people on this site submit photos so that they can improve their photography skills, not just to show off and win ribbons. They submit a picture of their child/pet because it is a shot they honestly think is good, do you think they would submit it if they thought it stank?
I think it's already all been said, my only beef was that John, who is usually a pretty good communicater, could have handled this subject with a bit more tact and class.

actually, the thing is that there ARE people who submit a pic knowing it's not all that great.. just to see what kind of comments/score it'll get. the thing is.. is that this IS a competition! and people actually competing and taking the time to vote have to go through a slew of snapshots that could hardly win any competition.. All that i want people to do is a little self-critiquing. "is that shot really worthy for a competition?"....

How much time do you spend looking at the photos you don't like? Do you give them 2 or 3 minutes to see if they have merit or do you say, "Another damn snapshot", vote it low and move on? If you give each photo a careful viewing, then you have a point, and should leave a comment explaining why you found it lacking... Otherwise, don't complain about losing the 3 seconds... Lifes too short...
