I could not find a better explanation for the discrepancy between the voting and comments regarding my last submission.
I have been unable to find what was wrong with this shot and that will remain a mistery forever, because the reasons of trolls have not a lot to do with photography.
In my (humble or not humble) opinion, the voting here is highly doctored, it would not be too difficult, under maths to demonstrate it.
A complete different matter is to demonstrate who doctors it and for what purpose. But that I leave to your, and mine, imagination.

I don't agree that the voting is highly doctored. I just think you got hammered by the "knock 3-5 points off for not meeting the challenge in the most obvious way" crowd.
Great shot, I like it.

Not sure if it is a record.. but, no doubt, it is a case.

I got this for my Flower macro entry.
Average Vote per Commenters:8.235
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 5.775
I'm not complaining at all. The lovely people who left a comment obviously liked my entry. The ones who didn't just left a lower score.
That's the nature of the beast we know and love called DPC.

Hmm, I don't seem to get an average vote per commenters - is this some super-whizzy feature that only people who are paid members get..? |

Did anyone's score jump up quite a lot too? Mine went from ~5.07 to 5.238. I don't think I've had another score jump that much. |

Your statistic is interesting, however it is not influenced by users without a camera and still it is less striking then mine.
7.444 - 4.618 = 2.826
7.444 - 4.364 = 3.08 (!!!)
More than yhree points difference in average is absurde.
Consider also that users who leaves a comment, leaves also a track of their identity, while users without even a camera are by far the less identifyble ones and the most likely to be false users used for doctoring the final outcome.
But I want to say it all in this thread, because I played a nasty trick with this submission.
I wrote a pretty provoking "Photographer's Comments" on that submission.
"Photographer's Comments" cannot be read by voters during the challenge.
But "somebody else" can. And, judging from the mathematics, "somebody else" was quite affected by it.
Basically, with this submission I aimed to check out something.
And I think I did.
Edited to add this:
Also, I disagree with the idea that only users who likes the photo leave comments.
I had this case, where regardless the pic ended with 6 favs, I got lots of low votes AND negative comments for the pic being off topic.
Again, when users want to let you know something good or bad, they do. No matter what.
Which, in the end, it is what I am doing right now.

dude. i'm serious. this is the one and only time i'm going to say this:
"stop being a paranoid freak"
you're experiencing what TONS of people before you have experienced.
the only thing 'fishy' going on is that there is a large subjectivity gap between those that appreciated your shot. I personally, while technically well rendered and an amusing enough concept, don't really find photos of figurines very interesting and would have given it a 4.
If I feel that way, I'm sure others do too.
Just take a chill, man - enjoy life a little bit :)

*waves hand*
"Hey, I shot JFK!"
Sorry to be the one to burst the bubble, but there is no great conspiracy at work at DPC...just good, old fashioned voter preference. And from experience, most of us who enter here have come to realize that the preference seems to be for photos that have a very "stock" look to them. They also must meet the challenge in the most obvious and in-your-face way or they will garner lower scores.
I didn't vote on "At Rest," but if I had, I likely would have given this shot a 5 or so. Why? It just doesn't do anything for me. My personal preference is for color and the overall color of this shot (again for me) is grey. I simply wasn't very interesting to me.

So, trolls are hunting down your photos and voting them low? Or are the people who get the best scores colleagues of the trolls? I think it's silly to suggest everyone who doesn't like your submission is a troll. Even the greatest artists aren't favorites of everyone. People are very diverse. You even say so in in your signature, 'The beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.' Be happy that some people really liked your submission and accept that the majority either didn't get it or didn't like it.

Does it mean that there are TONS of paranoic freaks?
Well, it must be the reason why I love so much to be one.
Sorry, I will not chill out.
I am exercising my right to stand for my opinion with my data, then the readers are free to make their opinions about it.
After all, as long as I am wrong, I will look more and more as a "paranoic freak". As usual, I pay my bill.
Last but not least. This is hosted, properly, as a Rant so, once again, I am within my rights.

Dear Heida,
I had to write this rant and in those terms to finally get a bad critique regarding that shot.
Of course, you are entitled to have your opinion about it.
I still very much doubt that you belong to a majority.

The discrepancy you see between the commentors and the rest of the voters is very simple to explain. The 10 commentors out of 200 some possible voters liked your pic and voted higher. Thats all there is to it.

Mmmmm... that's it then... you may well be right.
Which also indicates that I am not having fun (or the right kind of fun) anymore submitting my pics.
It is time to go in exile for a little while.
Let me just say goodbye to the real people and friends (a good number actually) which I met during the last months of my intense partecipation to this site: All of you are very welcome to contact me via private message for exchanging e-mail and details.
I hope to find again, in the future, the same fun in partecipating that I had in the past and that now seems lost.
Thank you to everybody and goodbye.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said 'freak' ..
I sincerely apologize. And of course you can go on and on about whatever you wish.
But I think you're making more than really exists.
Hey, fwiw, I thought my 'irony' pic would have a great score but I have a 4.7 at the moment. See, we can't always judge how others will perceive.

I don't think this is unusual. It supports my belief that people generally don't comment on photos that they don't like as much. There are two types of photos the draw lots of comments... extremely good ones and extremely bad ones. The inbetween stuff doesn't get much.
Your photo is nicely executed. It's a good quality image. I agree with previous comments that you probably lost points for your interpretation of 'at rest'.

The image is not that great. Sorry. It is a static glass car sitting on a table. Could have been a paper clip and a used piece of gum. Look at the image that won. Now that gives a restful feeling. Your shot is a 5 at best anything more than that is not warrented IMO.
I have watched your activities here since you joined (all 3 months ago) and you have been complaining about eveything since you came. You undoubtedly don't like it here and you think your work is better than most here give it credit for (4.5 average).
It is time for you to jet I guess. Learn to lighten up bud...

There is an alternative explaination. Maybe the shot just isn't that good ? There isn't much wrong with it. But there isn't much wonderful about it either. Its a technically okay shot of a bottle. Not exactly something many people are going to rush out and hang on their wall. As a result, its pretty average. Nothing wrong with it, but that's it.
Maybe instead of blaming the world for not appreciating your artistic talent, you need to look inwards ? Or rather than obnoxiously accusing the site owners of some malice towards your score, you could be mature
enough to accept the responsibility of your own entry, rather than insulting the people who put the contest on in the first place ?

I left you a comment on your shot. I think it a very nice shot. I like the DOF and composition. The black & white with some color was a good choice especially with the slight yellow tint coming in on the front of the car. |

My stats:
Average Vote per Commenters:5.200
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 3.815
264th place
A few people liked it quite well. Most people didn't. Completely typical result!
Personally, I'd like to run a couple of challenges where the photographer's comments show during the voting and see if it makes any difference. Maybe it could be a pop-up link so no one is forced to read it (could do the same with the titles ....) |

Dear Glimpses,
I'm so sorry that the site, the administrators, the voters and the universe in general continue to demand that you submit to this site despite the fact that you have yet to find something agreeable about it. I am sure that the constant pressure of being purposely sought out and destroyed is tiring. I don't know how you do it. I guess such is the burden of having a tremendous gift.
Best wishes,
mk
