I am thinking of getting a new camera, in a little while, and wondered as to what thoughts people had on the following. I was also wondering how everyone thought they would all compare. I know that this is difficult as one of the cameras is not yet available, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

The cameras that I am considering our: --
Canon 10D
Olympus E1
Nikon D100
Nikon D2H -- possible but unlikely

The top two in the list are the two favourites.

Any one of them would have at least three lenses with it, so the range of lenses does not really need to come into the equation. Just the camera and how easy it is to use, as well as the feature set that it has.

All thoughts appreciated, thanks to anyone who offers an opinion.

I also have a Canon G3, and bought a Nikon D100. I love the g3, except for the shutter lag time. As you know, there are many manual settings available. With the D100, it's a wonderful feeling to shoot many shots in a row, as quickly as you'd like. I had a Nikon SLR film camera years ago, and it feels the same (better?). I've only recently begun photography again, and am a beginner, but I feel that the D100 will help me. Terrific battery life--I've taken over 900 shots and the battery still shows a full charge. Similar or better than the g3. It's light, as far as D-slr's go. No complaints.

The Canon and the Nikon (D100) are very similar in features. I believe the Olympus uses proprietary lenses that won't be compatible with any film cameras you may have or want in the future.

I would spend some time evaluating the lense options for the nikon and the canon. I believe that you will find merits in both. The nikon glass is a little more expensive on average but it's great stuff. There are also 3rd party lenses available for both from several manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina.

I'd miss the extra 10D features either now or later though.

Thanks for the advice all...

Could you clarify the extra features that you'd miss?

The things I use all the time on my D60 that I really like:

selectable focus modes

selectable metering mode, particularly center weighted in Av/ Tv modes

Controllable button functions

Remote timer, which I use a lot for bulb mode, guess I'd need to use a stopwatch

Decent buffer size - the D60 doesn't really capture enough when I'm wanting to shoot fast sequences, and the 300d is about half the speed

Mirror lockup
