Hey guys I was just wondering if anybody looking at mars right now, or better yet, photographing it.
I hope its Mars or I'm really feeling dumb right now, but its been pretty amazing to watch. Here in the midwest whatever planet is close to the moon right now is Shining brighter than I ever remember it. I got some lame photos with my 75-300, but I suck, so I've decided to just watch in astonishment.

Yes, it is Mars...and tomorrow evening it will be the brightest it will be for the next 9 years, because it will be directly inbetween the sun and the earth.
I have nothing more than a 70-300. Grrrrr. Anyone know how to look through a telescope and take a picture? |

Actually, it's the Earth which will be directly between the Sun and Mars.
It will also be almost right next to an almost-full (98% illuminated) Moon, which will be at the highest above the horizon as it will get for something like the next 16 years.

There's also a 1-in-75 chance of an asteroid hitting Mars next month.

When the two first rose this evening in my part of the woods, they were pretty close together. Damn cool!! No shots taken, just enjoying.

No pics, but the sky finally cleared and WOW is it a bright moon tonight. Mars is looking mighty not-red, too.

Thanks for the PM Jason. Aside from a few naked-eye perusals over the past few months, I haven't looked much at Mars, and certainly haven't had a chance to point a telescope in its direction. I never pass up the chance to post a few older pics though. Here of some of my Mars shots from the previous two oppositions, when it was even bigger and brighter:
Both of these shot though my planet-imaging setup: C8 scope, 14mm scopetronix eyepiece, and Nikon 4500 digital camera.

I saw it last night, when Moon was conjunct Moon. It looked as if the Moon had a diamond earring. Totally beautiful. And then I also saw a shooting star!!
This morning at 4 AM, the moon had already moved on, and Mars was pretty far away from it - as seen in the photo posted by MattO. |

I'm convinced there is something Extrodinary going on up there right now. Although I have no evidence, Orion, Mars, and the Moon seem very obvious, and I think may have created a case of Insomnia for me. Not to mention the solstice. I did get rest last night, (keeping my fingers crossed.)

My daughter and I just gone done playing with her new telescope.
We looked at Mars, but she was far more interested in the Moon.
Here is a picture we took using a P&S held up to the eyepiece.
Why do I get the feeling I just got myself into another expensive hobby?
