This weekend I made a comment on an entry in one of the open challenges:

"Fantastic subjects, but the image is all subject and little execution, IMO. It looks like an everyday catalogue photo."

This morning I checked my "comments received" and found the following on my 5 highest-rated photos:

"It looks like an everyday catalogue photo."

This is why I almost never bother to make comments on any images except those I think are excellent.

i trust you reported the comments ... the SC should have no problem removing them

i wish commenting could be turned off by members

Looking more closely, the guy's a joker. He spammed someone's portfolio with a single comment: "Interesting idea, but rather careless execution." Seems he doesn't like criticism very much.

Sounds kind of like taking your ball away because the game isn't going your way.. take the rough with the smooth.. its one persons opinion out of billions on the planet, its easy to learn to deal with.

Retaliatory commenting is NOT ACCEPTABLE. The comments in question have been deleted, and the situation will be dealt with.

Nothing to do with this particular case, but please also remember that it is not acceptable to contact people who vote/comment on your images asking them in any way, shape, or form to change their vote.

Robert- I noticed this for your photos. That same individual left comments of a similar vain for olbol as well - all the same message - the one critical comment (albeit it accurate). Really annoying stuff, actually.

If you are going to post images, be strong enough and mature enough to take the comments as they come...

Anyone who wishes may comment on anything I have in my portfolio and I promise I will only respond in kind with kind and meaningful comments. Or just an "I like it" if I indeed do like it. :-)

I love negative comments about my photography, it helps me. I dislike comments regarding my personality or the physical appearance of my models.

Must be a comment on the same image in the challenge; glad to see I'm not alone in my opinion :-)

I agree with Ursula completely. I would like Site Council to make a firmer policy about commenting, but we're not all on the same page yet to set anything down.

Retaliatory comments are completely unacceptable, and will be dealt with.

Well, thanks. I hadn't realized it was 'serious" enough to report. I just wanted to let it be known that this sort of stuff is a real turnoff...

Ah yes...I remember this. Glad it was discussed and presumably resolved just recently.

Louis,

Unfortunately for you, and others that support this idea, after consideration, the SC decided that the shortterm benefit was there for a few, but in the long term, for the greater membership, it would not be beneficial.

You (Leroy) wanted transparency. We heard your suggestion. We read arguments for and against. We talked about it. We decided, "No."

You can discuss it till you are blue in the face (or would that be fingers), but at this point in time, for this website, and for the immediate future, it is not a feature that will be implemented.

I am confused so some idiot puts up a bunch of bad comments on your best pictures and this effects you how? I would think that it would only make the person who left look like a Jack@#$. Anyways that is jusy my thought on that..

It is serious. I hate that kind of stuff. I have no qualms acting on it.

that's not quite what I meant, let me try again ...

Some members (like myself) are not here for the comments, we're here for the competition, or to help others, or just to look at purdy pictures. I wish I could disable comments to my own images so that the people who like to comment can spend more time on those members who wish to receive them. I'm not too much affected either way, but I know many people look to the comments received as a way of learning. I wish those people could get more comments ... by removing the ability to comment on mine.

Making participation a little less joyful?

It is rude, mean, and serves no useful purpose. It does make him look bad, true, but it shouldn't happen in the first place.

It doesn't affect me, personally, hardly at all. I laughed. But in the big picture, I have found that when I make critical comments about images a LOT of the shooters come back at me, more often in PMs, disputing what I have said, or calling my a moron, whatever. And of course this guy spammed my pictures... Makes me not want to bother offering critque, life's too short.

Everybody remember, it also doesn't serve any good purpose to lay into the guy who made the retaliatory commenting, and point out how awful he is or whatever.

Boy, I got kinda angry here. :(

On the same note if someone leaves you a comment about technique and you look at their pictures and you find the same flaws or worse then you should be allowed to post a comment back. I think that is why having rules about commenting can be tricky. I also believe that getting a honest opinion on a piece of art is priceless because isn't that the point? If you drown out all the opinions you don't like then know one gets anywhere. perhaps I rambled but this subject is very touchy it is a issue of freedom of speech which we all should have even your enemies...
