Ya know, we have thousands of military personel over seas fighting for us at home.
Home is any country fighting for freedom, not just the USA.
We have done every subject matter since the war began, but I don't recall a challenge honoring our troops.
Ive seen Hero's, and Freedom challenge's but not one for our fighting forces.
Even if I am wrong and not recalling a the specific challenge, it is almost christmas, and creating some art to show support for what our troops are going through is at hand.
This site is fun, but lets salute our troops, honoring their tour of duty, their patriotism, and their deaths.
This should be an all out challenge, no holds barred, using the Expert rule set. Just like the troops, anything goes to win this challenge.

And a reminder that not all the troops are US. I met the nicest young man from Denmark on the way to Baghdad and he said even the folks in his own country aren't aware they have soldiers in Iraq. |

But this site is not open only to the Coalition of the Willing. It is an international site. Why don't you do an exclusive open of War and Peace? Military tributes (not required to fit any particular war) can go into the War section and people who like to support troops by keeping them home can contribute to the Peace section. |

Actually, for the troops, it's not anything goes. There are rules they have to follow, facing an enemy which does not have such restrictions. |

Marine Corps, 1979-1983, Mos 2834 SatCom, E3.
Not to start a debate, just trying to sell an idea.
"Anything goes" is just a term of sales, not a literal interpretation.
Expert Rules still have their limits, as do the rules of war, and the Geneva Convention.

OK, so do you guys want to leave this in Challenge Suggestions, in which case we can hide the political debate posts and only talk about whether we want to do the challenge, or should we just move this to Rant? |

I am not ranting, I am trying to sell an idea.
Hijackers are being impolite and trying to pull in other issues, which tells me, actually, this could be an interesting challenge idea.

It seems to me that this does seem to be a very UScentric challenge. I would also suspect that voting would have less to do with the photographic perits of the photograph than with the political statement being made. |

Not all countries send out their troops to "fight for freedom." Some use them simply to defend the homeland. Some use them to terrorize the civilian populace. Some use them to invade other countries. All troops should be included. |

Hey man,
my country has peace, freedom, democracy (which we actually invented) and are troops have a clearly defensive border role.
Maybe the challenge can be 'army' or 'armed forces' or something like that if we are going to have a challenge like that.

I think having a military challenge would be very interesting. In it could be tributes and disagreements. I support my country's troops no matter where the government of the day decides to send them. They have volunteered to stand between the desolation of armed conflict and me, my loved ones and everyone in this wonderful country. That is a noble undertaking.

Off topic but this is cool... when were you at the Stumps for Comm/Elec school?
I was a 2818 (secondary of 2881) 79-81, then 2829 -> 2821 -> 2826 (1st RagBag) when I got out... Going from TTY to Pewter MOS's got a little weird as The Suck implemented new technology.
Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled thread... (cool suggestion but I could have told you the direction it would take) |

At Stumps in 81, 0311 first part of my tour, requested something with computers, 2826, got 2834 instead. 3rd Fleet exit.
Made it to E5, but I liked to drink back then. I liked to fight too. Young and dumb.
Got a wild hair back in Dego and had to go to Tiquana. I had to go to frickin Tiquana. Gawd, I was dumb. Broke that standing order. My DD214 says I was insubordinate, when actually I was just dumb.
OOH RA.

A military salute challenge is too limiting and narrow in scope, imo. I would prefer a Uniformed Services challenge that would be inclusive of many more occupational categories, such as, police, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, coast guard, paramedics, military, or any uniformed service that serves for the purpose of maintaining and defending the well being of a population. |

how about just 'uniforms'?

...Perhaps because the subject matter would be too diverse. Boy scouts have uniforms, and do some schools, as do crossing guards.
I don't believe that uniforms would capture the intent of the OP... but that is just my personal opinion.

The spirit of this idea is to honor those fighting forces, of all branches of the military, from all countries, either in logistical mode,or combat, in medical, or in comand and control, in law enforcement, or recruitment, in any level, in any form that a person in any kind of uniform that represents the armed service he or she is in.
To honor, recognize, support, acknowledge, and respect what these people do, on a daily basis, full time warrior, or weekend warrior. Armed to the teeth to defend a sand hill, or armed for bear to photograph for intelligence.
Weapon, pencil, camera, tank, ship, or government issued leather boots. However, whatever, where ever, whom ever, as long as it is a person, or persons that is in the fighting forces.
If you don't like the idea, suggest your own. Don't cry, don't whine, I live in America where our troops are fighting, and dieing for you to have the freedom to make a brand new suggestion in a whole new thread.
This is my idea. Deal with it.
