I entered my first challenge with unfortunate results because I messed up the USM. I used it before I "saved for web" and what I was wondering is does it make a difference if you use USM before or after you save for web? Can anyone help me with this.

I sharpen right before save for web, after editing and resizing. You shouldn't post the original in your profile until after the challenge is over. |

When and how you sharpen can make or break a photograph. Under the learn area there's a great tutorial on sharpening. I wish I could give you a "one fits all" sharpening technique but that's impossible. So I think this tutorial will help you out a great deal.
The Learn area of the site has a lot of great tutorials that users have posted. It's a great place to get tips on a wide variety of subject.
Hope this helps.

I found your challenge image after seeing the one that you had on your profile and I see what you mean but I don't think the sharpening did that. I suggest reading this tutorial, Using Photoshop to Prepare Photos for DPC Challenges. |

Real World Image Sharpening by Bruce Frazier is a nice book to run through sharpening and the different techniques that are used. I found that it helped me out alot. you can also google and find alot about USM and Smart sharpen as well. |
