Congrats Jeb, it is always nice to see a fellow TS'r getting some much deserved attention, and taking the TS "pay it forward" type attitude into the real world and making a difference. :)

Oh, that was horrible....

That took me right back to '73-'74 when a friend of mine was going through the exact same thing. He made it to being a cop, but they gave him the 11-7 shift in this quiet little hamlet where nothing much happened. Just him and the car most nights, but all too many times I rode around with him so that he could just talk and try to exorcise his demons.

He was what was known as a LRRP (Pronounced lurp) and basically what he did was be a deniable assassin......he was sent into small villages in southeast Asia to kill leaders and disrupt the structure of the communities. If he ever got caught, he wasn't officially there. I used to listen to this poor guy just all but wail with the anguish at what he did, ostensibly for his country and all the right reasons, and my heart would just break for what our country did to this young man. And they weren't there to live with him and help him live with his conscience afterward. I lost track of him a few years later......I think he is probably okay, but I sure am glad I was able to be there for him, if just to listen. It's been thirty five years, and I still hurt for my friend. Too many of my friends came back damaged.....you'd think we'd learn from these damnable wars.

Thanks, dude!

I totally appreciate the reference on a couple of levels.....one, the CASA organiztion is really close to my heart, paying it forward is exactly what I am supposed to be doing there, and that is without question one of my top 5 movies of all time. Using that reference is a wonderful compliment.

Speaking of get togethers, I'm going to try to arrange one in Iraq. Anyone want to try to come? :-)

More on that plus the photo.

My first pic with my new Canon xti. Still learning and trying to figure things out but I was able to take some pics over the weekend.

Comments would be greatly appreciated.

Yay, ephln!!! Congrats on the new toy! And if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask here - everyone will help if they can. (Oh, and carry around that little book with you for awhile - I did. Comes in darn handy.)

Ernie, hopefully your country will continue to support Afghanistan. The Canadians (and the Polish) are very big contributors there - without them... just won't work.

(Political rant deleted... ) :-)

Duotone entries are up in our Challenge Results Thread. Congrats to Melethia for getting the top score, and top 5 results for cfarrell, cosprenks, and CWelch (who still needs a team).

This is hilarious! How to have a colossal screw-up and have it be a good thing......

I was shooting outside in the freezing cold, went into the church where I was for a concert, saw these backlit arches above the altar, and took a couple shots 'cause I liked the look.

Got home, dumped 'em into the computer, and discovered this weird effect and couldn't figure out what had happened.......'til I thought about it a little and realized........condensation on the sensor!!!!!

I don't recommend the technique.....but I'll live with the results!

I just posted a megabomb in Stopped Motion!

I'll have to check that out...
My rant, as it were, was typed then deleted before I hit post. Had to do with "talking heads" on the TV yesterday. One of them commented "we're at a point where the losses are at an acceptable level". I suppose I realize that there's a "big picture" view, but to me, no losses are "acceptable" - on our side, their side, or any side. The losses are staggering and aren't limited to the dead.

That was my rant, depressing though it may be. On to more cheerful topics. Jeb, gotta agree that shooting with condensation on one's sensor is probably not recommended, but it did provide a very lovely and interesting result!

The good things in life (or at least photography)...

This morning I woke up to some delightful comments! First, LevT (check out his shots of his tango instructors - reminds one of the beauty and joy in life) commented on my Duotone that he thought it was Goodman's work. How cool is that??

Second, I received this comment from sfalice:
Every once in a while, I dream about this image. Oh, how I wish it was mine. I'm gonna have to put it in my favorites, so I don't lose it.
Keep up the good work.

This is on a shot that scored a whopping 4.9 in a challenge. I think one of the highest compliments one can get is to have someone say "I wish it was mine".

By the way, check out sfalice's photo essay on the oil spill in the bay in San Francisco.

Third, three times in the past couple of weeks, people have noted in their photographer comments or in a PM to me that they thought of me and my style when they shot a certain picture.

I would not trade any of the above for a single ribbon here. Some things are far more precious. (Though I still aim to get myself a Postie at some point....)

I have to come back to Alice's comment, though - I fear that too often some of us probably don't take a shot because we know the technicals aren't going to be perfect - the background is too busy, the light is too harsh, yadda yadda... Nonsense. There's "DPC" then there's capturing what you see. It may not be an award winning photo, but it may be a good photo to someone just the same. Keep on clickin', people!

I've gotta agree with you, Deb. The comments that I have been getting lately, especially since I'm shooting more for my own gratification, and expression, are much more long lasting that whatever standing an entry ends up.

Relative to your Duo-Tones entry.....it's not just an awesome shot, but there *is* something of the way *you* see this young woman expressed in the image.

I noticed that in all your Afghani people shots.

Well, I'm off for a fun morning of testing! Stress tests, echocardiogram and something else which I can't remember. Wish me luck!

Good luck, Kelli! And tell 'em the stress of the test should be enough. Let us know how it goes!

As much as I like to tease Jeffrey, he was a lifesaver way back in February. I survived the first night (even had dinner with #1 son and his girlfriend). I'm awaiting the first day of class (as I type). I plan on driving back to the hotel and spending the rest of the night in the hotel (hopefully in one--not many--pieces!).
And just so you all know there is excitement this time too ... just got a text message that dad is in the hospital. Sounds like he's basically OK. I hope so anyhow. Fingers crossed.

Jeanne timed it well. We leave today for Atlanta for Thanksgiving. And hey! Catherine survived a full day with me. :P

Peter, that was a powerful story. Thanks for sharing it.

I like your pompoms, but your rhymes need some work...

Deb, if it's any consolation, I don't find the losses to be at an acceptable level. And I vote! :)

I'll try for it, Deb, anything better than shooting on a brisk Ottawa morning at the Experimental Farm...lots of dead flower shots but also tried for backlit leaves, glowing berries etc. Must get some PS'ing done so I can post em! Hd fun meeting/shooting with ralph and Shaman and a new dude who may be joining our TS ranks.

EDIT Kelli, how'd it go? Stress tests and all?

How did the tests go Kelli ?
11/20/2007 07:21:04 AM · #1899
I won't get the test results back until the 30th. It was a weird experience though. It took 4 1/2 hours total. They blew out a vein on my right arm with their IV and had to put one on the left, so I have two bruised arms today. I do know that they think I'm a candidate for cardiac rehab (but I really don't know what that implies). So, I'll just try to stay stress free.
