How do you say this? ISO as in eye-so or as the individual letters?
11/13/2007 11:43:45 PM · #2
I've always said I-S-O eyeso sounds funny to me.
11/13/2007 11:52:53 PM · #3
I think it's always I-S-O
11/14/2007 12:06:06 AM · #4
I usually say I-S-O aloud, but sometimes I say it "eye-so" in my head, when I'm in a hurry, or feeling extra lazy.

I've just about always heard it 'eye-so' and say it that way in my head. Takes me a minute to catch up when someone says I-S-O.

Any body know what it stands for? If its an acronym then probzbly I-S-O (which is my preference).

eye-so for me, just to buck the trend :-)

'yea i proounce it as in "Eye-Sew"
11/14/2007 01:06:19 AM · #11
"International Standards Organisation"

I hope so, otherwise I'd feel pretty daft if I'd been saying all along, "I shot this at International Standards Organisation 800", and the letters stand for something else.... ;-)

That's correct. Used to be ASA (for American Standards Association), but it went global.

Eye-so.
And I'm an auditor in that world.

Remember, in these modern times, you can say "eye-sew" with confidence, but in the 'old film days', it was quirky to say "Ah-Saaah", so you said said, "A-S-A".

Nothing to see here. Move along and and go take some pictures now!

Cheers all. ;)

I-S-O, 3 letters. I've never heard it pronounced the other way.
11/14/2007 08:26:20 AM · #17
It is pronounced eye-so

But you can say it either way you want.
11/14/2007 08:51:18 AM · #18

I wouldnt say that too loud, some folks might get the wrong idea about you.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.........

MattO

BTW I say I-S-O to stay on topic.

I say I.S.O.

eyeso sounds funny to me! Although the more I read it in this thread, the more normal it is starting to sound. hmmmmmmmmm.
11/14/2007 11:45:51 AM · #21
It's still A.S.A. in my head.
11/14/2007 11:54:55 AM · #22
I.S.O.

Though even acronyms swing both ways: FBI, CIA, NSA, as opposed to NASA, LASER, and hybrids like NCWIT (N.C. wit) and the more cutesy types: DRCOG (Doctor Cog).

IMO, if it's three letters or less, the letters are enunciated separately. I.S.O. =)

ETA: The notable exception to the 3-or-less rule is file extensions. File extensions used to be limited to 3 characters, but the more common types are always referred to phonetically. I don't say individual letters for JPEG, JPG, GIF, RAW, DOC, TIF, ZIP, etc. Of course, the pronouncability overrides, as I do spell out PDF, PNG, and PSD.

Ok, I'm done now. =)

I - S - O

three letters separately. I've never heard it any other way.

Okay if you're going to say I.S.O. Just say it real fast. Go ahead and say it now and see how it sounds. hahahahaha

Apparently ISO is not an acconym and according to the dictionary is pronounced: ahy-soh.

And to think I've been calling it the wrong name for all these years: the grain factor button!
