Holy cow! I'm stunned and really, REALLY complimented that you put me in that crowd.
FWIW, there are PLENTY of areas I'm still a total newb at. Artificial light sources, for example. A strobe is still this cool thing they have at dance clubs as far as I'm concerned. ;) |

True, and I got helpful answers faster than any other internet forum I've ever experienced. I just looked at some of my oldest posts and saw that I was very much a beginner, yet the responses were unbelievably encouraging. From my second forum post ever (asking for feedback on a fairly awful portrait)-

That sort of comment demonstrates the difference between a critique and criticism, and I probably wouldn't have been around long without encouragement like that from others. I posted some stupid questions and got patient responses. We need more of that, and less profanity, crude humor, and snide remarks. Personal respect leads to site respect, and we all benefit. |

DPC might be a better forum than most (my experience tends to line up with this). Let's assume this is true. Is that any reason for us not to be better? If the individual users who make up the community keep trying to be nice, and keep holding themselves to a high standard, the forums here will continue to be better than most. If the individual users don't do this, the quality here will most likely eventually slip away.
We can *all* do better. I personally am, if you'll excuse my moment of inhumility, a good communicator. I am good at language and at writing, so that I can generally be precise and say exactly what I mean to. I can make negative comments about people's arguments while still making what I say sound nice. However, there have been a couple of times I have gotten too emotionally involved in a thread, and caught myself coming across as rude. (It's a good idea, as has been mentioned, to be thinking about how things will appear to someone who isn't inside your own head.) In those instances, I have apologized. And I will try harder, thanks to this thread being a reminder, to not have that happen again. I'm not going to have reasons about why I don't need to try.
I'm not upset at anybody who is pointing out that DPC is a civil forum already. It really is a good point and one that in my opinion is worth making. I just want to encourage everybody to think about how we might need to try in order to keep it civil. And if you think that everything is fine and there's no work that could be done, I guess that's okay. I think I'm just really excited about the prospect of a bunch of people working together to make things better. :-) |

I'm close to my two year anniversary as a registered member at DPC. I have learned more than I thought possible, thanks to many here. I don't spend much time in the forums but it seems as if the DPC 'crowd' goes out of their way to be helpful and friendly to new people. Sure, there are exceptions... which make this site a lot like real life.
It is a good reminder. Sarcasm(of which i am guilty) doesn't always play well in B&W text. I can always remember back to the days when I thought an F-Stop was a camera setting, not a really cool group of teamates who dominate the WPL/DPL competition! :) |

You're kidding right? KV is one of the most fun-loving people i know! She's full of silliness, I guarantee. And I have to agree with her that inside jokes often do dominate, and while its fun for the people "in" on it, its not very fun, and quite exclusionary, to everyone else. |

In response to you question, as Frisca pointed out, I am not at all a serious person, infact anyone who has met me in real life or in DPC Fanatics chatroom will know that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I'm also extremely social. I initiated and organised the first several DPC London GTGs (the first of which was one of the very first open-to-any-member GTG organised in the forums).
I am absolutely not suggesting the forums we kept to serious content only.
What I would like is for the chit-chat and joking be contained within appropriate threads (I've started a few in my time, just search on llama llama cheesecake duck) and that threads started to discuss photography or other non-humourous issues be allowed to stay on topic. I hate coming across a topic of genuine interest with maybe 100 replies and finding that only a handful of them are related to the topic, the rest are essentially a chatty conversation between a few people.
I have no problem with their being threads for silliness, chatting, socialising and banter. I would simply rather this didn't invade every thread on the board as it seems to at times.

See this is the problem in saying things in black and white, the grays are so difficult to express. You would have never guessed that when I posed that question, I wasn't even serious and my intention was not to pick on you. It was just reaction after reading your post.
Anyway I am going to educate myself little bit.
I do not know how much panjabi language you know, but there is a saying in it. In panjabi we say:
Vidya dadati vinayam.
(education gives Humility (civility) )
The full version in panjabi would be:
Vidya dadati vinayam,
vinaya dadati paatrataam,
paatratva dhanamaapnoti,
dhanat dharmam tatatsukham.
The translation for non panjabi people:
Education gives Humility;
Humility gives Character;
from character one gets wealth;
from wealth one gets righteous (dharmam) life;
from righteousness gets happiness.

| I personally am glad to see this. i turned off almost all the forums a few months ago because it just seemed to be a lot of fighting, which my brain can't seem to stay out of when it sees it:( a year and a half ago when I joined, I found this site to be the best I had ever experienced when it came to people helping new people out. i wouldn't be half as mediocre as i am now if it wasn't for the nice people here. |

On a more relevant note, I've spent a lot of time in various forums over the years as my interests have changed and developed, and I'm impressed with the crowd here who seem like a friendly and helpful bunch!
