Boy I'm glad to see this post... one of the reasons I've been less active in the community is because it seems to have strayed from where DPC was a couple of years ago when I first joined. One of the reasons I joined was because of the friendly neighborhood environment this was... it's high time we got back to that. |

Once was a little town, everyone knew everyone. Now it's a city, with bridges and manholes... there are trolls, rats and other groups mixed in... Going back to "town" era is probably won't happen again, but with more SCs, we could keep the crime down :/
I still want my city shirt and city mug, and a ribbon certification page (little side-jack) |

One of our main goals is to foster a community of artists of all stripes with a variety of backgrounds and points of view. We want DPC to be a fun, educational, and spirited place whose focus is on photography, but with a healthy dose of friendship and debate.
Lately we have noticed an increasing amount of derogatory comments and snide remarks in the forums -- and not just in Rant threads. Often these are intended to be funny or snarky, but frequently they just come across as mean. Many of our users have been here for a long time and forget how intimidating it can be for a newbie to leap in and join the fun. We forget that not everyone understands our own twisted senses of humor and that not everyone is in on the inside jokes. And although we know that there are a billion threads on topics like 800 pixels and stolen images and no titles on challenges and "why did this score so low?", remember that not everyone knows that.
We respectfully request that everyone think before posting. Read back through your post and see if it really says what you intended it to. Make use of the "Preview" button to make sure you have your quotes in order. And, above all, please try to remember what it was like for your first month here. Help the newbies and bring them into the fold.
The Site Council will be increasing our moderation of the forums in an effort to keep this a fun, friendly place for all. We are not out to censor opinions, but to encourage mutual respect and civility. We want to increase our membership and we need you to help make DPC the best it can be. Please play nice.
Thanks, and feel free to share your thoughts.

Thank you for this thread. I hope it brings change to the Forums and DPC. Unfortunately this is not the first such thread on Forum etiquette. It is one thing to 'announce' something like this and another to act on it. I deliberately quoted the whole post because it appeared to have 'dimmed' so far down the thread and I felt it needed repeating.
Look at the posts in this thread so far, are they civil? Are they on topic? Why do people feel the need to throw in little quippy posts when someone has initiated a discussion. Either they see (and perhaps actually seek out) any 'boring' posts as an excuse to gain a little bit of attention in a thread that they have no interest in other than replies to their own 'snarky' post or trying to degrade it because they know it challenges their behaviour. Why do people have to comb through posts of rubbish to filter out legitimate replies to the original post?
I am all for 'cleaning up the Forums', but it is not just the 'newbie' posts on basic DPC questions that get 'threadjacked'. The threadjacking began a while ago and has been allowed to run rampant (as mentioned, even in this very thread which touches on the issue) - it shows the mentality of a few here toward what the Forums are for (entertainment). If you want to put your quip in at least mix it up with a legitimate response to the subject.
As for remembering your first month here, I remember mine well. I received a lot of help via threads and some of that was 'newbie' questions and answers. I was appreciative of the maturity, patience and kindness shown to me from those offering help. It would be nice to see that atmosphere prevalent again.
Sure DPC keeps growing, but most people probably join for the same reasons; the photographic 'fun school' aspect and (what appears to be) an active community of like minded people. If people who join are let down by the first 'reason' and then 'shot down' by the second - of course they will leave. Worse though, is the 'status' that DPC becomes as a result. I've always believed strongly in the potential of DPC. The foundations are there (the challenges, The Critique Club, the existing images, the feedback, the learning, etc), but they get shrouded in tangents so quickly. Perhaps this is because they are not strong enough. Make those strong (again) and DPC will benefit all who come here for those very foundations.
Of course, the skeptic in me thinks this 'announcement' may be an attempt to clean up DPC for the new owners - beginning of the end and all. Whatever the case, DPC has been very successful and the creators should be proud. An Anniversary Challenge would be nice to see when the calendar ticks over '6'. Even nicer though would be to see stronger foundations of what we all (or most) came for in the first place...
"The original idea behind the site was for it to be a place where the two of us and a couple of our friends could teach ourselves to be better photographers by giving each other a 'challenge' for the week." langdon
The Forums are an important part of DPC, but they are not the main foundation. |

No disrespect intended here; the "atmosphere" you mention is still here. Learning, kindness, helpfulness - those haven't gone away. Yes, some threads get a bit carried away, put for the most part the community here is still populated by kind, helpful people with an interest in photography. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to suggest this site to people I meet.
For example, in the last couple of days the following threads have been active. Of over 11100 posts in the 'Photography Discussion' forum area, these show in the most recent 25.

I think DPC is still the same, but as we get more members and registered users there will be more rants, bitching and back stabbing. Overall, the same attitude exists of helping, sometimes with short sharp answers or in the other extreme the meandering, childish prankish threads. The jokers still joke, the moaners still moan...
But we are a basically normal, functional bunch of neurotic egotistic, moronic wannabees or hasbeens!!
In fact, just like any normal family :)) |

Actually one of the reasons for this thread is a "don't bite the newbies" message as well.
In the past few weeks, I have seen no less than 6 (and those are just off the top of my head) threads where a newb asked a question and was literally blasted for even asking. In a couple of instances, they were even accused of running a scam or something.
THAT is unnecessary and does NOTHING to promote a friendly community.
If a newb posts and you suspect it is a duplicate account, a spammer, a scam, whathaveyou, assume good faith and report the post and let the SC check into it. I think that will go a long way to making it at least appear to be a bit friendlier to newbs.
:)

Er, new owners?
WHAT did I miss?
Muckpond, thanks for the post. I've been a member of DPC for a very long time. I'm a minority in that I seldom enter challenges but do love viewing images and commenting too, when I've time. I also used to participate more in the forums.
These days I seldom do because MOST threads, even those with topics of interest to me, contain SO much chit-chat between subgroups (that, frankly, belongs on MSN Messenger or in a chat room environment) not to mention the in-jokes.

You're kidding right? KV is one of the most fun-loving people i know! She's full of silliness, I guarantee. And I have to agree with her that inside jokes often do dominate, and while its fun for the people "in" on it, its not very fun, and quite exclusionary, to everyone else.

I asked because she (it seems to me) saying that even a chit chat or humour shall not be allowed. And people should strictly stay on topic all the time.
If this goes I would not be able to participate in any threads.
In our personal lives we already have so much to cry about, I do not want to be serious.
Being rude is one thing and shall be stopped. People making other people target because of their personal likes shall be stopped. But a joke here and there does not kill anybody. This is fun of DPC.
I will never forget this:
"You are joking and I am dying of pain" (said my wife 2 hours before birth of our daughter)

Regarding new members being 'picked on'. Whenever I'm thinking about joining a new forum, I lurk for a few days reading old threads, finding out who's who. After that, if I've got a question I'd like to post, I generally search around the forum first. There's no way I'd join a forum and post a newbie question out of the blue. 9 times out of 10 you're going to irritate the regulars, or at least get some smart replies.

DPC has traditionally been the other 1, and we'd like to get back to that. |

My point was that proper etiquette should be met with proper civility. |

I respectfully disagree. Whether or not it is "proper etiquette" (or netiquette), it should be met with civility. Perhaps good will begat good, eventually. |
