Should have had a beer (wish I'd thought of that); next time I have thirty minutes, they'll be spent in your portfolio, Steve (it wouldn't have been wasting time, but by the time I saw it I didn't have enough time left).

Best,

Woot ! My Free Study, while tanking in score in comparison to the beautiful 6.0000 it started at, has garnered enough attention to be voted a favorite by someone !

Funny how when the world cracks up those little rays of sunshine come through the chinks . . .

And he passed the test of whether he is the true prophet . . . he told me to have another beer :)

Greetings from a Forward Operating Base somewhere in Afghanistan. We got down here pretty easily this morning on a STOL (short takeoff and landing craft) which was a very nice ride. But as with most places in Afghanistan, this is a bit like the Hotel California... you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave. We'll hopefully get back to "home base" in a day or three. Or four. On the plus side, they have washers here. On the negative side, I don't have my laptop or my card reader, or the battery charger for the baby Sony. And only one book. Could be a very boring few days, which all said, isn't that bad. :-)

If I can steal this computer, I may even be able to get some voting done!

Hey Deb! Just want to say Hello! Take care over there! And while you are voting, throw a couple 10's my way! :)

Deb, there is not a day goes by, without me thinking of you and your safety..... Don't worry about votes for me, as I am still on cloud nine from achieveing my first ribbon, and haven't entered a challenge since..... Take care, and keep on smiling.....

Yes, Deb, we all think about you, worry and pray.

Just enclosed this 'cause I didn't know what kind of chopper it was 'til you ID'd one in your portfolio.

Can someone please explain to me what a snapshot is? I have been reading critical comments and posts in various threads that say an image is just a snap shot. I could understand the comments if the image was not well lit or had no thought to composition, but many times that's not the case. So there is something I don't understand.

I think in a lot of cases "snapshot" is a matter of opinion. For some it may be subject matter. In my opinion, which combined with about $5 may get you a Starbucks mocha, a "snapshot" is still a meaningful and legitimate form of photography. And it can be poorly done or it can be well done. I'd have to say that all of us here at Team Suck take better "snapshots" than 95% of the soccer moms of the world. There's a shot that Germaine entered in a challenge, and I'll see if I can find it and post it here - it's a tremendous "snapshot". :-)

That is a wonderfully emotive photo, snapshot or not.

But - what's wrong with being a soccer mom ??

Ack - this will be a long month.

I put my November Free Study shot in last night. A photo I love, which I *think* is decent technically as well.

Well, someone must have stolen the computer because my freestudy has been sitting there with not even one comment until some hot lady made her comment. Or was that a lady in a hot climate? Same difference, LOL. Stay safe.

Don't fret too much over it, Juli. Usually it means to the commenter that they would prefer a shot that was more "set up" or planned - or at least, that's my take on what they mean by it.

Snapshots can be art - just ask the National Gallery. ;) The Art of the American Snapshot

Karen, that's a good link, and probably as good an explanation as possible. I enjoyed the booklet. Thanks.

And it was said, that one beer would bring disciples, two beers would convert them, and three beers...four beers...who would care, it's party time!

Heh! Not a darn thing - just trying to pick an average category of people who take pictures. Perhaps "average Joe" would have been a better analogy. We got any Joes here?? :-)

I'm a soccer mom (even have soccer balls in the trunk of the minivan) - I guess that would explain why my photos are not doing well lol.

I'm a firm believer and proponent of the proverbial snapshot. Photography can be art, yes; and when done well and carefully by masterful artists, it's awesome. But photography is also the means to capture a moment - it can be plain and simple, it can be spectacular and breathtaking. It can be a snapshot. What the lens sees in a particular instant in time, one which shall not be exactly repeated again. I take a whole boatload of snapshots. And I like 'em.

This explains it quite well. So photojournalism and street photography would primarily be snapshots? And how about sports photography?

The Beginning of the End entries are up in the results thread. Congrats to Greetmir for his top 5, and to hipychik who led the scoring!
