OK, with the explosion in personal POTD threads, I'm thinking that we need a separate forum just for these messages.
Like the 'Rant' forum it should have the option to be not seen.

I second that motion. Those threads can be fun for some, but it would nice to have the option of ignoring them.

they tend to crowd out the other posts and make them go off the page too soon. consolidating them into one forum would help.

I'm all for it, and agree it would be nice to have the option to hide it from the "home page" like you can the "Rant" forum. |

That is exactly why I feel we should have a seperate forum for POTDs and POTW and POTYs.

Would my thread about how I did vote in an Open challenge fall in the POTD category?
Is there somebody who could give a definition allowing to identify a POTD-like thread?
Last but not least, is there somebody who can express what he/she feels wrong about the POTD threads in order to include them in a specific category to be excluded by the home page?
Well.. actually.. would it not be much simpler to ask the writer to put the thread in the Rant category?

The problem wouldn't be half as bad if it were just one per day, and everybody who wanted to post a POTD posted to the same thread. Same goes for the 'underrated' threads, we have two already today.
Aside from that I see no problem with either - they're talking about photographs which makes a nice change ; )

What bod said. I have no problem with people wanting to post their POTDs or underrated, misunderstood, skipped over etceteras, but everyone seems to want their name in the title of the thread which means the entire 'recent threads' is all the same thing, just by a different person. Having the option to view or not would be nice.
(Of course, gratuitous bumping for the sake of inanity isn't helping the cause much either.)

Well, people were complaining that their photographs weren't being recognised.
These threads are doing a good and generous service.
But fine, if people don't want to reward people who should have done better, then we can stay grumbling about our own pictures who's genius has been left unrecognised.
And while i'm ranting, I think I'm going to stop commenting on pictures unless the comment is positive. I'm sick of spending time and thought considering what improvements a shot might need or what let it down just for the photographer to single out the comment as 'not helpful'. |

i'm not proposing doing away with them altogether, i'm just proposing a way of consolidating and organizing them.
i do appreciate the recognition they provide. it's great to see critiques even if 99% of them are 'way to go great shot' without a lot of constructive elements. but i think they need to be consolidated and organized.

I'd like to take the suggestion a step further and revive the suggestion that has been made previously to be able to turn each type of thread on or off, not just the rant. At this point, I'd be happy to see only administrative announcements ... :-P

Franziska that's a suggestion I've made more than once over the last several months.
I'd like to see a check box list in my preferences that allows me to choose for each forum whether or not I'd like threads listed in my home page top 30.
And I'd also like the option of having more than 30 on the home page.
And I'd really like to be able to see more than the last 5 threads that I'd contributed to listed in my profile page - especially since the same thread is listed more than once if I've replied to it more than once, which is unecessary.
I'd particularly like a way of tagging threads so that I could find them again later - sort of like our favourite photographer and photograph lists but for forum threads. I'd be able to mark any I thought contained useful advice as well as any I was enjoying reading.
And whilst we're at it, how about an option to anti-tag (!) a thread which I would rather no longer see in my list at all?
:D
Yes, yes, I'm just a demanding diva.
But how will our great site administrators know of the things we wish for if we don't tell them?
:D |

I've suggested this before and had the retort 'just use favourites in IE'. I completely agree though - I always lose threads.. |

It seems to me that there should be one running thread for POTD, Underrated, etc., and people can add on. I don't think everyone needs to create their own thread every time. The current system makes it almost impossible to compare, for example, which photos from a particular challenge were their favorites.
In fact, why isn't there just a single thread to discuss each challenge's results? It would be more helpful to me to have that discussion in one place instead of scattered among 25 threads.
That, or every member gets their own thread ("channel") to post items of note .... |

I don't think anyone is saying they should stop - just that perhaps they should all go in one place ? There are currently 10 threads on the front page, out of the 30 slots I have visible, all about the same topic, but with a different name at the top.

i do appreciate the recognition they provide. it's great to see mentions even if 99% of them are 'way to go great shot' without a lot of constructive elements. but i think they need to be consolidated and organized into a more meaningful grouping.
