Woke up early.. (dog's fault again). Decided to take a different approach this time around. Put the dog on the leash and headed for the dog park. Long .... very long walk. Dog's tongue was dragging when we got there.

Once there light wasn't helping much but took a couple of shots anyways, always like taking pictures of the lighthouse...
(had to play with PS when I got back home to make it look better.. I know I know, I cheated. Bad Rob Bad)
Took a shot at the condos over the swamp.

Neighbor was playing his favorite game when I got home. Had to take a shot of his favorite toy.
(Lucky Neighbor) **looks at his keys and thinks yellow with black scratch stripes would make this look so much better**
Then I sit on the grass to play with the dog. Dog wont fetch. Dog looks at me funny when I throw the ball. Dog thinks I am nuts if I think he is going to run around chasing that damn ball after I made him walk to the park and back and he had to chase all those pesky birds and crabs that all got away.
Foot Shot.

I started out and only got about 10 feet where I found this clean out fitting [thumb]603020[/thumb]. Then I wandered further and found a single bottle brush hanging where I could use the building wall, about 50 feet away, as a background, I shot it into the sun. [thumb]603019[/thumb] I found a tree further down the sidewalk. I like this because of the texture, colors and the brown stripe. Another part of it is the organic shape surrounded by the hard building edges. This is the dichotomy I love to play with. [thumb]603036[/thumb] In a vacant lot I found a crumbling sanitary manhole and the rust lured me in. [thumb]603049[/thumb] Cutting through a ditch right-of-way short cut home I found a pepper bush just turning showy. [thumb]603056[/thumb]

OK, here I go:
Woke up early this morning and dressed warmly 'cause it is getting chilling here (in Canada). I started walking towards my sister's house. She lives close by to a private school that has been in our village for around 100 years. It is owned by a religious community and they have very well preserved the environment around. I was first struck by the majesty of the trees lining the alley. This yellow "bonsai" caught my eye particularly. .
Walking around the main building, I discovered a path running through the trees . As I approached the cross at the end of the path, the sky covered up in dark clouds and gave a very creepy feeling to the scene. Honestly I couldn't wait to get out of there!
Walking out of the woods, I spotted this weird looking plant. It was kinda curly and brown and very nicely lit by the sun who decided to come out at this very moment. I like the contrast between the light of this shot and the darkness of the previous one .
But my real thrill came with this last shot. The sky was just incredible, I couldn't believe my luck !
With this incredible conclusion to this first (and very pleasant) walkabout, my day was done!

I decided this time to head North to the end of our road, then right a block, and farther North to some woods. As I was walking curiosity got the best of me, and instead of turning right, I went down towards the dead end. For years I went past this way and never went down the road, even though it looked interesting. After walking another block I came across this:

It was quite the surprise and I spent most of my walkabout down by the creek. There were a lot of people fishing and it was warm and nice to walk in the woods.

I walked back towards the entrance and saw leaves falling and floating. many of them made interesting shadows in the dappled light. I spent quite a bit of time watching these things and taking pictures. The whole thing had a calming effect!

wickee_one called to tell me that she was on her walkabout and I decided to meet her since she wasn't far away. On the way I figured I'd get the obligatory fall leaf shot.

As I was waiting for her to finish her last shot, I saw this butterfly. It was amazing to see this thing hang on as the wind blew, it was quite strong.

If anyone has any questions on my processing just PM me and I'll add to comments. It's way too late to post 'em all now.

I'll be sure to comment throughout the week.

I must admit that I cheated a bit. I actually did do a walkabout from my Pod (current home) on Saturday, but most of the shots were repeats of stuff that already appears in my October in Beige 30 Days Slice of Life challenge.

BUT... on Sunday - we got to go on a road trip!! (This is huge around here, trust me...)

So on the way, we saw a common sight - camels on their way to somewhere:

Then we stopped by a very lovely, very upscale, very "Western" Kuwait shopping mall. The rest all come from there. Not all that exciting for you guys, I'm sure, but quite a treat from my usual surroundings!

Will be traveling (hopefully) today, but promise to get to comments some time this week.

Took a pretty long walkabout yesterday, so had to wake up early to process and post! I started this month from my house again, but walking down the hill along the route of my regular commute. Carrying my new Tamron 18-250 with a polarizer attached, and figured this would be a good opportunity to see how it would perform.

Took me a while to get going, had that sense again that the neighbors were watching and wondering, but then I started seeing some fall colors pop, and noticed the contrast of these two trees so stepped back and captured them at 250mm:

Continued on down the hill, and then saw these guys hanging from a tree. Shot him at 250mm as well, and really cranked the saturation and contrast on the image:

Continued on down the hill and got some more shots of halloween decorations and suburban homes. When I got to the bottom of the hill, decided to cut through the state park to the other side of town, using the walking path where I managed to meet the self portrait part of the challenge (at 18mm):

I cheated a bit and walked along one of the wetland paths, where I shot these weeds, again at 250mm. I often try to shoot scenes like this, and find grasslands are very hard to capture in the camera. No editing on this one - just resize and border:

Then I rambled across the park, popping out on the other side, where I saw these shadows on the sidewalk as I headed down the street. Shot them at 85 mm, and really cranked the contrast, backed off on the saturation, added a ton of noise, cropped the sides to focus only on the shadows, then flipped them on their side:

Ended up down at another park near downtown, where I stayed for a while shooting beach and water pics, then convinced my wife to come pick me up since I didn't feel like walking 5 miles back up a hill to my house! All in all, a nice walk on a beautiful day, the Tamron performed well for what I got it for (travel pics when i want to travel light), and a lot better than staying home and cleaning the house!

Hope you all had fun, too, and now that I've got these up I'm looking forward to browsing the rest of the thread and commenting on all the pics.

I actually didn't do a walk about because it was snowing and pretty windy. So, these are from my front porch yesterday. I love where I live, but my hubby was leaving when I saw the deer so they were running away because he makes too much noise :-). So, here you go:

ETA: Forgot last picture :-)

Sorry everyone. I was called to pinch-hit for the cub scouts. Although I did plenty of hiking, my walkabouts didn't really match the spirit of the side challenge. I will try to get back here to comment on your posts though.

Here is where I was over the weekend:
10/22/2007 05:16:00 PM · #35
So this is my second Walkabout, the first in the rain from home and this one from work in the SUN. I chose to take my 70-200 with 1.4 TC for this one because less then a quarter of a mile away is a river with ducks, geese, and other birds. Well I now know that this was a bad choice because it limited what I could shoot, but I did my best.
My nephew macleodn also came with me his first walkabout.
So off we go about a hundred yards yields this shot:

So we are walking and he is shooting and i am shooting we arrive at the river and I look back and realize how little distance we are from where I work so I take a shot for scale low building in the center: :

Now to look around the river and spot a male black duck trying to impress a female to no avail:

More rooting around yields my next:

Take some shots of ducks, geese and trees when I spot this,I don't know what it is but it looked cool, wind was blowing about 20 Mph so fair shot I will re-shoot this one:

Light fading we ended our walk and headed back, happy I did this and vowing next time to take extra lens and a tripod. It is a good idea to do this I drive by it and never stop to look at the beauty that is there!

Nothing went quite as I planned it this weekend.

I had had such a good time with night shots last time, I thought I would try it again, but we're on the northern end of the windy weather that's raising such havoc down in San Diego. We had very strong wind gusts, blowing ash from the Zaca Fire last August (no rain to dissolve it/wash it away) and blowing palm fronds -- not a good idea to take me or my equipment out. Scratch the night shots.

Sunday was a good deal calmer, but a friend of mine announced that he was bringing some visitors up from Los Angeles and could I get some stuff together for a picnic??? I could, and so instead of going for a walkabout I went in a car to Shoreline Park where I never go under ordinary circumstances.

We were lucky to find a table right on the bluff above Ledbetter Beach. The water below was alive with surfers, because, according to the weather report, the first big swell of the season was due to come in that afternoon.

Some of the surfers seemed to be pretty good and other not so much .

This guy was just sitting there observing the show.

I am told that the dream of any surfer is to find The Secret Spot where the waves always break perfectly and only your buddies are there. There wasn't anything secret about this place, but looking through the trees, I thought it looked like it should be. Yes, the focus is fuzzy, because I used soft focus to make this look a little dreamier (I think).

So.... once again, I've been kicked out of my box. Walkabout or not, that's a good thing.

P.S. Apologies to the surfers out there for any gaffes in my narrative. 8)

I thought I'd post up a few quick picks from my walkabout this Sunday. I headed out from my house about an hour before sunset as I figured the light would probably help catch something interesting in what I would normally see as mundane and it worked on a couple shots.

I've included the info on how I happened upon each pic in the details as to not overflow this thread. Also I will be going through and commenting on lots of shots tomorrow at work :)

I'm slowly making my way through the pics, but will leave at least one comment, hopefully more, for everyone who participated. Hopefully some others can do the same during the coming week as well!

I'm looking at the posts and it seems I CAN still post? I took my photos on Sunday but I didn't get anything done with them by midnight that night, so I thought I was too late...I still can post?

I'm swamped right now but I will find the time to comment this week as I said I would. Just need to get some of the "bill paying work done" then I can play. After all that is what we tell our kids "do your homework first then you can play as long as you like." :-}

I'm working my way thru the ones as they were posted. I like to leave a comment on the majority of each person's pics so it will probably at least take me the week to get thru lol.

Socorro is a pretty small town (pop 8500) in central New Mexico. I've lived here since July 2000, minus a 2.5 year stint in New York (brrrrrr!!!). I go to the post office, which is located in the Socorro 'Plaza', at least once a week (don't like mail delivery at our rural home). I knew there was a walking tour of this area but have never taken it -- always in too much of a rush. So I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for me to see what the walking tour was all about! I only did one little loop of the tour, starting in the plaza then going down the street about a half a mile or so and back.

This is the gazebo located in the plaza, also called Kittrel Park. From late spring to early fall there is an open market here on Saturday mornings. Not being much of a person for crowds, I chose not to do the walk on Saturday :-)

This mural is on the Chamber of Commerce building. This was originally the Hilton Drugstore, founded by a relative of Conrad Hilton. The buildings on this block (known as the Hilton Block) were first built in the early 1880's of adobe, but were later replaced with brick buildings.

This is the First State Bank building. That's me in the window; notice my shoe :-)

The Val Verde Hotel was built in 1919. Evidently this was a tourist stop thanks to the railroad running through town. It is no longer a hotel, but it is still a restaurant.

The Capitol Bar is the only bar in town that is not also a restaurant. It's kind of a dive. However, it is popular with the New Mexico Tech college students. I hear there are pool tables and sometimes live music. I've never set foot through the door, not being a big fan of college hangouts :-) This is a very old building as well, and was vacant for a long time because it was partially destroyed by a lighting strike. It was restored in 1993; I've been told it is really interesting inside so I guess now that I'm into photography I'll have a reason to go in some day!

That concludes this little loop of the walking tour. As it turns out it was really hard to choose just five images -- there were loads of interesting things to photograph even in this little portion of the tour! I will definitely do the rest of the tour someday.

I am also behind on commenting, as it is a busy time for me right now. I will be back to take care of it soon, so be expecting them. I am enjoying seeing everyone's walkabout shots.
Thanks to everyone who has commented on the few images that I posted. I didn't get to do anything much Sunday, so no pics. I did get the shuttle launch today, from 150 miles away, and it is still awesome to see.

Ken headed out first and I was going to go out once he got back from his walkabout. While he was gone I kept looking outside and thinking how beautiful it was outside. I decided to head out with our girls before Ken got back. I knew they would enjoy the walk just as much as me. So, I got the girls ready and we headed down our road. Our first stop was at this wild flower. My daughter has a wild flower field guide and likes to look flowers up to see what their names are. So I took this picture while she was doing her research.

We then went just a little bit further and I saw this truck. It has been sitting where it is for many months, possibly years but I can't recall, with a for sale sign in the window. I have seen it many times but never thought of taking a picture of it until the walkabout. Every time I see it I wonder if anyone will ever buy it.

I take my few shots and we then head up 450N. We cross over a busy road to go across to Dunebrook, a non-for-profit organization that works at preventing child abuse. They have beautiful landscaping around their building and it is kind of wooded in the back of the building. I decided to take a couple of pictures of the large butterfly "sculptures" they have there. I find them very fascinating and pretty.

This one was taken in the front of the building. It looks as if it is flying up into the sky.

This butterfly was taken in the back of the building. I took this picture while the girls were playing on the playground equipment. I liked the colors of the butterfly against the foliage.

The girls and I then waited for Ken to meet up with us and we headed back to the house. It really was a beautiful day to get out. I am looking forward to taking pictures once the snow falls. It always amazes me at how different something can look, even something ordinary looking extraordinary, when it has snow on it.

I really like the spikiness of this thistle. Felt the need to bring out the highlights with quick curves and levels.
Hope you don't mind.

edited for spelling.
