If you scan through some of the previous threads on this subject you will find plenty of people who submitted images they honestly thought were good. Perhaps they should have waited until they improved, but there's no better way to learn than to put it out there and see what other people say.
Registered users don't get a portfolio, so challenges are a good way for them to get feedback. And don't forget the small children, the developmentally disabled, the visually impaired, the colorblind and those of us with bad monitors. Sure there are a few jokers who get a kick out of submitting the worst photo they can take. But should we really throw the babies out with the bath water? I hope these discussions don't prevent people from submitting to challenges in fear of having their shots ridiculed. |

I would agree with the comments made by rox_rox. There are individuals and groups on DPC that may not have yet developed to your standards, but that is no reason to cast aspersions on their efforts.
Perhaps if you took the time to comment on these images and proffer advice on how these individuals can improve, then the issue would resolve itself and the need for threads like this one would wane.

I agree with you guys, but hate it when I spend time and effort on a particularly bad photo, just in case someone really needs the help, then later find out they submitted it as a "joke". |

It's threads like this that raise my confidence that I'm not the dorkiest person on the planet ;-) Good day.

This thread never was about the technical quality of the images, I repeated that several times. I just wanted to suggest that if you know your picture does not meet the challenge or you think it might not meet it, you should not submit it and wait for the next challenge. This has nothing to do with the technical quality of the picture (I find it even more tragic when a really good, but DNMC image does not get the score it would have received in a free study or in the right challenge).
Now I'm already being accused of ridiculing the developmentally disabled and the visually impaired and of casting aspersions on their efforts (although I never wrote anything to that effect). This is unfair. I'm officially giving up.

Sam,
Please don't take offense. I'm not accusing you of ridiculing anyone. I'm saying that this type of discussion can raise the fear of ridicule in those who don't take the best photographs, and thus discourage them from entering. Personally, I'd rather sift through the duds, knowing that most people really did give it their best shot, and let the chips fall where they may.
Raising awareness is a good thing. And once again, I agree that the purposeful DNMCs are aggravating. However, I still believe commenting on individual shots is the best way to address it.
Edit to add: P.S. Don't worry about that pot ^ calling us kettles black;)
Peace,
Roxanne

correct, i also many times submit a photo just because i know in challenge more people would look at it, then to just put it in portfolio.
Here is an example :

Oh Sam, come on back. We know you are trying to help. I knew it was a crap pic but when I saw it I thought it was funny and others might get a giggle out of it. I should have not made my first response and apologize to all for adding to the fuss. Tomorrow I'll make a special photo just for you and I promise there will be a pencil in it.

I demand that there also be: (1) two feathers, one white and the other black (2) a pen, so the pencil isn't lonely as the only writing implement and (3) the title should make us all laugh.
