I'm so sad I was not able to submit to Flora II in time... I started taking some pictures for this challenge about 1 hour before the deadline... Ended up with this photo when there was less than 2 minutes remaining for the deadline... I was going to upload it on the last minute when I realized it was too big (275KB), so I would not have more time to submit it...
If any of you could please take a look at it and criticize, it would be very appreciated...

It is generally frowned on to post your "almost made it" photos as well as out takes until the voting on a particular challenge has ended.

I've been falling like a brick today... UGH... THought I might land a top 10 score, but no longer thinking so. 6.3 now in Fauna. Can someone please stop the madness?!?! ROFLMAO (I'm not complaining mind you... Just hoping that the downward trend will reverse!) |

This is my first time posting a photo and was wondering how do some of you know the individual scores you are getting? I have found where the number of votes and views and average vote are, but not the individual ones.
Thanks!

The instant gratification syndrome is definitely A factor in the equation.
The other factors I believe that are playing here are the misconception of flora = flowers.
Yet another factor that sometimes plays a role in the scoring is the monitor calibration - I always try to take a path that would showcase my photo best to those who have a monitor calibration that is -.10 to +.3 to what I see on mine.
Originally posted by JaimeVinas: Im currently doing a test on this. I had some very good animal shots that are not WOW POP colorful, but the pose, the background and the emotion is there if you sit on it for a few. You will start to wonder whats the story behind it. But this time I submitted a mediocre shot of an animal but, with alot of color and see how it comes out. Currently its at 5.84
I am doing this test because I posted a really good shot of my dog on the half challenge and it got a 5.4
This shot I submitted is not as good, but its very colorful and it attracts the eye. So I am thinking along the same lines of PhotoInterest on the voters here. |
Jaime I have often thought about doing such a test myself but the problem would be is that the results would not be consistent because:
-you do not have a control group that stays the same accross the board. In other words the majority of voters who voted in the first challenge may not be reflected in the the majority of voters in the next challenge.
-every voter's monitor is calibrated differently so what we ourselves see is vastly different than what others see. Oh, how I wish everyone's monitor was calibrated the EXACT same.
-Subject matter varies from challenge to challenge and thus so will the votes swing widely from the differences presented in different compositions.
O.K. enough high-jacking the thread

Today, I have seen mine as low as my 14th best score and as high as my 5th best score. It is currently my 10th best.
But, on a brighter note, if it the voting ended now, I would now have the all-time high score for the camera I used, beating my wife's record.

Almost 4.8 is actually quite respectable for a first entry - especially if you're not familiar with post processing. I've been participating since this spring, and my second entry at 5.53 is still my highest score (and it got slammed for not being level). I've scored in the low 4's for some pictures that are quite nice, and my average over 33 challenges is 4.93. If your picture doesn't meet the general voters' expectations, they bash it big time. If you score in the very low 4's or down into the 3's, there is probably something wrong with your photo - high 4's are good shots. Low 5's are very nice. But some on dpchallenge are able to - time after time - get 1 in 1,000,000 shots (probably 1 in 10,000,000 with the advent of digital) time after time.
I'm still trying to figure out how to break into the high 5's, and have no clue how to pull a 6 or better (hint, hint to all you very talented folk who are disappointed with a low 6).
If you can't make it fun, and not just about the score, then dpchallenge will just be an exercise in frustration.
We're glad you're here, and hope to see lots of your work in future challenges.

My Fauna shot did the same today, almost .4 drop between vote #50 and vote #85. Couple of great comments & a fav.... but the score is dropping like lead. :/

You see, I took my time to select a nice subject. I double checked my composition and lighting, and did what little I could in post-processing under basic to make the image pop. I'd probably have given myself a 6 or 7. Therefore:

Great. Now my lifetime has dropped below 6. Lesson learned. Can I get my update button temporarily suspended? This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you. |

Just wondering why that would be frowned upon? What real difference would it make to those who are being voted upon within the challenge? What's the difference whether it was critiqued IN the challenge or in a thread??? Does it lack merit to be critiqued because it just missed the deadline?
I'm afraid that I don't understand this alleged "understood frown". Please explain.

Personally, I love the idea that there is a stand-out in textures, the coloring seems to be "complimentary" between background and subject. I think that one nit-pick comment that might be said would be that the shadow of the cactus might be considered a "ghost object" so to speak. But, I like the concept of the textures.

By putting your 'almost entries' up for comment etc. in the current challenge threads, you are diverting views and comments from those who actually entered the challenge. Since comments are very hard to come by for so many entries, it is considered less than polite to put these photos out for public consumption until after voting ends.

It's not merely frowned upon or impolite, it's a rule:

I post this in this the hope of not starting another debate over this rule. I suggest searching the forums to read the previous discussions on the topic.
As for getting comments, people should certainly ask for them, just after the challenge. Alternatively, post and ask for comments whenever, but don't refer to the shot as "just missed challenge X."

I see your point about comments being scarce. That is so very true.
But, we are spending time in this thread, making "comments" about our scores and how miserable or ecstatic we are about them, comparing scores, commenting on other types of comments.....is that not then, "diverting" our attention away from spending time to comment on shots too? What is the difference between the two in terms of "diversion from commenting on entered shots"??? Just a point of debate. :)

Yes, in this particular rule, I see that as meaning that one should NOT ask about their shots in any challenge that is not finished voting and could in particular "identify" their personal shot. I also see this rule to mean that we must not post our "outtakes" from challenges while the challenge is still being voted upon as THAT may create another possible way to identify our shots in the challenge being voted upon. Those points I see! They are very valid and the reasons behind that rule very valid.

Jamie, thanks for your comments. The shadow was intentional, however I did not realize it could be viewed as a "not so good" aspect. Regarding the texture, this is part of the vase where that mini cactus is planted. The vase is made of coconut fibre. This mini cactus was the only interesting subject that I had for a last minute submit. I found the texture interesting too and it was already there anyway... I thought about replacing the texture with a black background to make it a deeper scenario... But liked the textures...
PS. You might find it funny, but to delay a little more my submission, the entire vase has dropped on my table. I felt lucky anyway, since my wife was not around at that time... Otherwise I could get in trouble... Anyway, I was able to "fix" the cactus and took the picture... |
