Capture an image that is both artful and creative with a sense of design, imagination and aesthetics. Something more than you'd see at a stock site - perhaps more avant garde. ;~D

reckon the voters'd have a tough time with a challenge like this ... its possible that some of the very best images might cop a lot of very low scores .. it happens to me ALL THE TIME ... lol lol .... but hey, BRING IT ON !!!!!!!!

Jutilda is on a roll...ok I am really slow to respond but I think this is another wonderful idea of hers, a challenge called Avant Garde, and with special rules whereby posthumous and zeuszen get to kick people out for being too DPC...the forums afterward would be so much fun...

For gawdsake, don't call if "avante garde" or people will have a narrow mental concept of what 'style' is appropriate, which I don't think is Jutilda's idea at all.

But it's a lovely challenge idea, yes it is.

oh I completely agree with you...but it would be interesting you have to admit, in a warped kind of way to watch people 'discussing' their concepts while the 2 moderators come in a destroy them...and hey lets add you as the perfect third judge!

This sounds thoroughly amusing.

Well, I'm flattered, but I'm not sure Zeus, Posthumous, or I would think our concepts of "avante garde" are the be-all and end-all of the issue. Anyway, you'd end up with people trying to guess what would please US, which I suppose is different than guessing what would please the voters-as-a-whole, but I'm not sure this is any improvement on anything, you know?

it could be worse, the suggestion could be to make it edgy

That just sounds wrong. Could link in to another of the what is art ? threads going on just now.

not an improvement..just an opportunity to make people step back and not take things too seriously...
and really I am not being all too serious, I just think it would create the ultimate in forum ranting...

zeus is the be-all and I am the end-all. Together, you would all be doomed... I mean saved...

Great idea, and the winner will be a stock image ;)

I think it would be a cool challenge. Yeah, a stock shot would win. Then by the vote of the majority of Don, Zeus, and Bear, it would be DQ'd. And it would only be fitting that the winning score would be 5.3. I'd get a kick out of voting such a challenge.

It's soooo anti-DPC it just might work.
10/07/2007 01:42:51 AM · #21
Great idea. Won't change what wins but it would still be great fun to shoot for it and see what type of comments you get.

Hmn... "artful and creative with a sense of design, imagination and aesthetics." Actually that pretty much sums up what a photo should be. What have we done wrong?

Forgetting the artful, creative and imagination parts?

It's actually a good question. Plenty of DPC images have those qualities and win ribbons.

Hmn... "artful and creative with a sense of design, imagination and aesthetics." Actually that pretty much sums up what a photo should be. What have we done wrong?

"Artful" is not the same as, say, "artistic"; a craft can be artful, one can be artfully skilled at a game, and so forth. "Creative" is a loaded term, means something different to different people. "Design" and "Aesthetics" are commonalities of MANY DPC ribboning images.

"Imagination" sometimes we seem to be a little short on, if not as shooters then as voters; I grant you that.

It seems to me that if anything is missing, any component that makes DPC-winning images, as a broad whole, seem more "commercial" than "artistic", it's a lack of soul, of spirit, of emotional component. And that's something I look to "art" to provide, that "design" does not, or usually does not.

But it's not just an issue of how we shoot, it's an issue of how we VOTE. If more intimate, more penetrating, more topical, more involving images were regularly rewarded, well then we'd see more of them.

It's my sense that this is what the OP is after. It's certainly something that Zeus and Posthumous passionately espouse, as do many others.
