I would like to see a Black-and-White HDR challenge. (That rustling sound you hear would be Ansel Adams, spining in his grave.) It would be a challenge specifically for post-processing. This article made it look interesting.

Why would Ansel "spin in his grave"? His Zone System is the original, film version of HDRI...

Good challenge topic though, I like it.

Looks way cool, my only problem is I still havent mastered HDR in color let alone in B&W. Anyone care to start a tutorial on how the heck to do HDR. I have tried following the Adobe instructions but have given up as I keep getting that there is not enough dynamic range or I cant save for the web because the file is too big (I was trying to convert a RAW at 5 different exposures).

I like this tutorial - just stumbled upon it last week.

PM me if you are interested with Photomatix 2.5
^_^

He would be spinning in excitement, trying to come back to this side, so he could show us the way. Of course!

[edit to add] Lots of us are probably trying to learn HDR. I know I am. It looks good in BW.

Simplest thing is to bypass adobe altogether and invest in Photomatix Pro, about 99 bucks; it does a better job and it is much easier to use; then you open the finished result in PS for final processing. I can help you with Photomatix, but I have only tried Adobe's version a couple times.

the best part for me is the increased contrast. it seems more crisp. and I like the superblacks & bright whites. this is nicely cold-looking. sharp.

I agree, could be the occasion for a great B/W landscape contest

oh that'd be sweeet! i don't really like the hdr'ish colors, but i love how much depth and contrast you can achieve through hdr, which is why i LOVE hdr in b&w...

a few examples out of my portfolio

A couple of test

I LOVE black and white HDR. I just got Photomatix last week and I've been processing pictures with it nonstop. To be honest I feel a little spoiled now, regular low dynamic range photos look flat :\ Black and white HDR can be so clear and full of detail. It's amazing.

Bump! it's time to reconsider this.

I don't get this comment -- I thought his whole set of techniques was centered around trying to increase the final print's dynamic range as much as possible ... I had a chance to visit Adams' Carmel studio several years ago, and I asked one of his assistants what Adams would have thought of Photoshop, and got a response to the effect of "He'd have been all over it" ...

Adams would have flipped over Photomatix.

He's spinning in his grave, trying to get out of course. He's jealous of all the toys we have & wants to be a PhotoShop Wizard. King of the HDR process. And so on.

Naturally, this challenge would not need a description. Advanced rules would be fine.

Heck yes! Go all Edward Weston on us, sir! Make your vegetables into monuments! It's a time-honored thing to do :-)
