I think I owe about 200 people one of these this week... :) I believe Richard (yanko) came up with the actual award.

Hey I think I beat Dr Achoo a couple times...do I get a Sneezy if I can find them?...
Just over 5 in Candy now. Have the shot I want for DejaVu but am on a crappy comp whose USB port don't work none. Arghh. |

I did my Deja Vu shot today. It was fun.
I've have three comments on my Opening shot. Two of them said they don't see what it has to do with 'opening'. I thought it was really obvious; I am really astonished that people don't see it. |

How does one become a member or Suck? My shots suck really well, sometimes competing for the brown, yet I am still here. |

Isn't it amazing how you can see it so plainly and others don't see it at all?? |

So this is how my Candy is sitting not good but not bad. I so don't want to think that it might replace a top five.

Interesting, these were very well received.

Okay, I'll respond with my thoughts on the questions you two have posed. I'd never claim these are universal truths, and I have no doubt some Team Suckers will disagree with some, or maybe all, of what I'm about to say. But all of this is to respond to "why did Don's shot score as it did while Joey's were well-received"?
1) The two other shots are by Joey Lawrence, who attracts people looking for his stuff. No surprise, then, that they liked it. They're not sycophants, but rather fans who already like his style and seek it out. Much like, say, the several TSers who commented positively on Don's shot after the challenge ended. :)
2) Don's shot was also "well received" by the commenters, who averaged a score of 7.0. Plus, nearly 20% voted it 7 and up.
3) Joey's shots weren't scored, whereas Don's was in bokeh, a challenge whose very meaning continues to be hotly debated. Did people find the bokeh pleasing? Did it add to the shot? Those questions weren't asked of Joey's shot.
4) Don's title isn't connected to the image, at least not for me. Whereas Joey's titles reflect the images.
5) There's that tilted line, which will always result in lower votes from some folks who just don't like them. Also, Don's butterfly's wing crosses the line, which will probably knock off a point for some people because it doesn't stand out as much.
6) Some people just don't like pictures of dead things.
One other compositional difference: Joey's shots place the butterfly in context. Specifically, on a road. And the one with all the favorites shows cars going by. Don's doesn't make the context as clear. To me, that could be a patio as easily as a road.

Happy New Year, everyone! :) In Hebrew, we say L'Shana Tovah Tikatevu (le sha-nah toh-vah tick-ah-tay-voo) - may you have a good and sweet new year.
If you're interested in learning a bit about Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, check out my pic and comments from last year's self-portrait 30-day challenge:

Mazel Tov! Thanks for your thoughts, Jeffrey. |

Went through many many of the ribbon winners..and decided that trying to emulate them would kind of be like me trying to paint a Monet. It would probably look more like a rohrshack test.
Have an idea brewing for "Wealth" which might do ok if I can get my camera to focus properly.
May even take a stab at my first silhouette.
Otherwise...it's been a disappointing week as far as photography is concerned.

Happy New Year, Jeffrey!
I have a shot in the Deja Vu challenge. I think it turned out pretty good. It was fun trying to get it right. |

I'll disagree with that one. I find Joey's titles somewhat on the blindingly obvious side for my liking, whereas I find Don's title more intellectually stimulating, and I think it fits the image spot on. But I guess that's a matter of taste.
Otherwise I agree with your feedback.
There's a major difference in the photographic styles really. What Joey did was to put the fragile, pretty little butterfly into a dark, dead, mechanical context, a strong contrast which has an immediate emotional impact on the audience. Don's shot doesn't have that - while the same layers of meaning are present in a way, Don's shot doesn't hit you with it. It requires you to sort of flutter away with the image and glide along the tilted horizon with the title in your head. Which doesn't score as well. |

I'm with Jelena on the titles thing and her assessment -- added to Jeffrey's -- of Don's butterfly shot.
And since you taught us, Jeffrey . . .
L'Shana Tovah Tikatevu (I even said it out loud as I retyped it).
I know I'm way late in posting an outtake, but I couldn't get this how I wanted it before challenge time, and had nothing else. After working on it in a variety of forms, I hated it, so didn't submit. Then yesterday, when I stumbled across it, I didn't mind it so much, and wondered what my problem was. Today I don't like it again. I'm a bit schizophrenic, I guess. Anyway, any thoughts on it would be appreciated.
I'll have another of these after candy ends :/
Best,
Rob

completely off topic, but i need some advice from anyone who knows.
i just had an idea (wow! stop the presses!) i've had a few people say they'd like to get my images emailed to them whenever i have new ones, but i can never remember who, etc. i thought i should do a daily new photo mailshot, with links to my dpcprints account. so, i just go my daily 'better photo photo of the day' email, and i was wondering how they do that. does anyone know?
i'm guessing it's a template of some kind, with automatic links. is it a pdf? any bright ideas? i know what i want, but have no idea how to do it.

Fancy formatting directly in an e-mail is usually done with HTML. The easiest way might be to use Outlook. Make sure that the format is set to HTML and then just insert photos... nah, that's not going to work. Do you know how to make Web pages? |

You might want to look at a flickr or a facebook group application where it can alert friends/members to events like "Hey, new photos available." The email receiver would need to go the site and download and/or browse the photos.

I dunno. I've never done this the easy way. I've only done it the hard way. |
