I don't think that this particular challenge should be about whether or not a filter was used. It should be about whether or not the effect used to achieve impressionism was applied well...whether its a long exposure with camera movement, a PS filter, a lens baby...whatever...is the final outcome pleasing? |
I totally agree with you. |
I would have to lower it because I gave you a 10...:)
I agree also, the assignment was to create something that looked like impressionist art, if filters help then use them. |
That's right! Now everyone go change your votes on mine!!! :) |

Where does it say to create something? Isn't this a photography site?
Shouldn't we be taking photos to look like impressionist art? |

Sure, but not everyone's definition of "taking a photo" is the same. For many, taking a photo doesn't end with the shutter press, but with the polish of final processing. I find it highly amusing to see those who used filters worried about low votes at the same time those who didn't use filters worry about competing against those who did. :-/
News flash: it doesn't matter. Both approaches have one thing in common... neither guarantees a good (or bad) image, and scores are usually a measure of the end result, not the path you took to get there. We all have different tastes, and a shrewd visual chef will appeal to most (but not all) regardless of the ingredients available. |

Then lets not over sharpen and over saturate and do bluring and all the other stuff that is being done, when it comes down to it we all change to some degree the look and feel of almost every photo taken. Do I think this is something I would normally do to a photo, no, but in this case it is fitting. I really appreciate a couple of the photos that clearly found a way to get that feel without using effects but there are some good PS images also. |

Yes, I used a filter, though not very heavily. I couldn't bring myself to do it ;-) Just didn't like the results when *I* tried various filters on *my* image. My score says voters apparently do not agree that I got the resulting image right for this challenge. No comments yet so I'm just guessing they don't like it ::grins:: |

This is becoming one of those divisive challenges. Filter vs No-filters . Mine is without filter, I played around with filters and it definately looks "nice" for this challenge. I will post the image with filter as a outtake after the challenge.

Defining polish is where it's tricky.
Yes, it is amusing.

imagesbytlp and BeckyT I would just like to say thank you for your wonderful posts, which have been an absolute breath of fresh air.
I have to be honest and say that pretty much in every voting thread you see people who (genuinely) whine and moan and accuse trolls of giving them low scores when the fact is that we all have different tastes and what appeals to one (or many) may not appeal to many (or one). However, IMO this thread has been by far the worse and I would not tolerate my 10 year old daughter behaving in such a brattish way as others have on here
Hey people...if entering challenges is going to cause you so much angst or your ego is so shallow that you cant take a low score then my guess is that you should probably give them a wide berth. Enjoy 'success', accept and learn from 'failure' and life is a lot sweeter
ohhhh and given that this is a scoring thread I should add

The comment (from JeffryZ) was useful as it pointed out a flaw which I hadnt really fully seen but which is 100% valid
Do I wish it was scoring a little higher, yep of course, but its not going to kill me that it isnt and if people dont like it then that is fine as it is their personal preference. No matter where it finishes up, I enjoyed taking the shot, I enjoyed trying to the best of my ability to meet the challenge and I like my picture....Oh and I had a great time marking the challenge, there are some truely wonderful images within the entries (as ever) |

I am happy with the score. I thought it would be around upper 5's but maybe it changes in few days the way I would like to see :) |

I second that. I do enjoy my photos. And thank you jonfrommk because you have made now want to go through and finish voting despite what score I am getting. Which by the way is starting to creep closer to a 5. There is hope yet.

Well, I'm coming along and giving you guys great scores, because these images are so PRETTY!
I love this refreshing challenge, I guess because I'm was an artist long before becoming a photographer, so I have the correct eyes to see color, balance and the play on light. Impressionists were the first artists to actually think to go outside and paint in real sunlight, which is why lighting is so important, and fast strokes of the brush.
Overall....I'm very impressed with everyone's images and also saddened to hear about all the low scores. Such a pity people can't appreciate the different look in this one itty-bitty challenge. I'm loving your images. Maybe folks will 'lighten' up a bit before the voting is over.
Some of these images lost their photographic quality and are taking on the real look of a painting. Interesting to observe how art plays out differently over the ages. I am not concerned about the crossover...if you all knew how many painting are hanging in galleries across the world...due to having a computer and doing what you guys are doing and then they paint the photos and sell them in galleries as painted artwork, you'd be amazed!
Of course...I'm old-fashioned and prefer to do my paintings without the aid of effects on my computer.... sorry to ramble, but please don't be discouraged, your images rock and you should be proud.
In fact, I've seen 3 images from this site painted and hung in our local art gallery over the past 5 years. Researching images to work on a painting is how I came about this site to begin with! You guys should be worrying about artists that might snatch up your PP image and paint it for big bucks!!

Much more articulate than I would have been. Perfectly put! |
Well said and I totally agree. I just don't understand why people are voting down the filtered shots. Do you do the same in advanced with draganizer? Lucisarts? Even desaturation? Do you vote down the images in expert because they are digital art and not a photograph? You are not making sense and aren't being consistant with your voting paterns. |

I was feeling a little down about my score until I skimmed this thread, and now it feels just fine. I suspect I'm getting pulled down by people who think I used a filter when in fact I didn't ... but its all good. I like the photo, and that's all that really matters.
