Thanks for the lesson on posting pictures in the forum. I've uploaded some of my favorite pictures to my portfolio...

Desert Poppies
CJ Desert Poppies
Flowering Hedgehog
Buckskin Gulch
Man at the Lake w/family
Pet Friendly Hotel

Any feedback would be great...

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to mentor so far.

I think this entire mentor thread is great. I really think this ought to be a working program of some kind. Maybe people can sign up as mentors, others can sign up as students. You could even sign up as both.

The mentee would obviously get the mentor's practical advice, technical as well as subject matter, etc). The mentee could get another set of eyes on each picture - something we need as we learn.

The mentor would get something CC'ers do - the chance to assess another person's picture, pick it apart, see how it could be improved and perhaps see the result of a reshoot without having to do a setup for it. The mentor would get all those great big brother/big sister rewards (helping others) and perhaps both would make a new friend.

That said, I want to jump in anyways. I'd love a mentor. At the same time, I'd take a mentee. I can't help anyone who consistently scores 5's and 6's. I keep myself afloat in that area too.

However, if you're a consistent 2/3/4 scorer, average no higher than 4.9, no more than 1 pic over 6, sure, I'll give it a shot. I'll help someone if I can. I use AIM, MSN and could use yahoo if necessary.

Email me or PM me if you're interested.

This is a very good idea. So many people have great ideas, but just need some fine-tuning or some general help. I've had my own personal mentor here at home (dsidwell) and he's really helped me to improve. When I don't follow his advice, I usually regret it. : )

Another one just appeared today...

Being 'serious' about doing so is an important thing :) Let's get started... I'll send you a PM so I can get in touch with you...

What on earth would you ever need to know about lighting? Artificial lighting? You use existing lighting wonderfully. Especially in "Pray". What do you need to know? Not that I would have an answer...

I told amsmyth I'd post these links to her shots of the fair:

(I took some liberties in re-titling these just for this posting!)

I`m think maybe I could do with a mentor too.
Sometimes I can see the picture I want to take but rarely to turns out that way.
A collection of my pictures can be found at //tinyurl.com/lrdl
I am on Yahoo.

Cheers

The only light sources I ever use is my bedroom lamp, and the sun.

I have a lot of lighting stuff. I don't use much of it for DPC. I have a couple 1000W Halogen worklights with umbrellas, 3 clamp lights with a bunch of different bulbs, spot, flood, colored, etc. I have 2 smaller desk type clamp lights with very small 40W bulbs. I occasionally use a strobe light now and again, and last but not least, black lights. For my studio type shots, I use the big clamp lights, and sometimes a flashlight for my star filter shots. That gives me some good intense easily controllable light for those shots. Most of lighting is used in doing portraits of my friends' and relatives' children. I've done a bunch in the last week too, and more on Monday. Its fun, and if I can get good at it, I can use all that stuff to enhance my portfolio in case I ever need to show anyone. I've put up a few in my Portraits Gallery on pbase.

EDIT: I messed up the link

For my entry for the Past Challenge I used my bedroom light from the side, and one of those tiny (one AA battery) flashlights held directly above the ocular lens, to both illuminate the top against the background, and to shine the light out the objective lens and onto the mirror. I put the camera on timer and handheld the flashlight out of the frame.

The areas i need the most help in are using different f-stops & shutter speeds. I get a pretty good idea in my mind as far as what i want to capture but can't seem to always put it down on film (or memory card as the case may be).

I have recently been shooting using the bracketing mode on my camera and am learning a bit more that way, comparing the different exposures and seeing what each does in relation to the subject I am shooting.

I have looked through and searched the forums on here and really couldn't coume up with anything on the subject, so if anyone has a link to a good tutorial or has the ability to maybe do a little mentoring of their own on the subject, you have a very willing student here.

Thanks.

Hi

New ere. I guess you've gotten alot of interest. If you are willing to take multiple people, I'd be happy to go under your tutelage. Or if you are willing to give feedback on pictures or know another person who wants to mentor that's good.
