I'm sure your remark was meant as a throwaway line - but I'm also sure it didn't build up anyone on a low score. More importantly was it an example of constructive comment ?
The pictures in this challenge do vary a lot in style, interpretation, and quality - but there are some great photo's and some great interpretations, along with a number of people still learning and improving. |
I agree. I'm not sure if you were refering to me, but no, I never said anything about entries being brain dead. Usually when I comment, I either tell people what I liked or why I didn't like it (ie. out of focus, grainy, lighting too harsh, etc.). I consider that constructive. I get upset when I get comments like, "This is just a snapshot" or "This is boring". I'm admittedly not a great photographer. I'm am amateur, and comments like that don't help me improve. |

Kate - I wasn't referring to you - I was quoting Lanndonkane who first said that most of the entries in this challenge were 'braindead', before replying to your post by suggesting that this isn't the right website for constructive comments.
His two set's of coments don't seem to sit easily next to each other . . that's all I was saying.
And 'yes' I agree with you a comment like 'this is boring' tells you nothing on how to improve the shot, or why in their opinion it is boring.

At least the second comment gave me the satisfaction that I got emotion out of the person with the commnent "this is cruel". Even though I have the feeling that I received a bad rating based on that, but hey I am happy that I drove emotion with my shot. That itself is satisfying. :)

Depends on how narrowly you define "constructive."
"ugly model:" If you thought the model was obviously beautiful, then this tells you it's not universal. Cruel, yes, But also helpful if you find the nugget.
"This sucks:" They so disliked it, they not only voted it low, they commented on it. Hey, you got a reaction out of someone. If you were trying to, you succeeded. If you thought the photo was terrific, now you know that's not a universal opinion.
"This is boring:" they're telling you why they don't like it. You need more than that?
Now, you'd probably say that "the lighting is harsh" is constructive, but purely technical observations often don't tell you whether you moved people, so they can be less constructive than emotional reactions.
Yes, people could pay more attention to niceties, especially about making it clear they know their opinion isn't universal truth, but that's their problem. Just ignore the attitude and find the bit of useful info.
There are plenty of people here who give you a wide range of criticism, but not everyone can take the time to write paragraphs. We also have a very wide range of cultures, languages, etc. in this worldwide community.
The upshot is that if you put your shots here, you should commit yourself to find the nugget within each comment and consider it for the future - you don't have to agree to find something useful.
Here's an exercise: go look at some of the 3000 comments I've received. Look for the nastiest-sounding ones and try to figure out why I checked them helpful.

I also got this "OK" comment. I found it hilarious, if not very helpful :). Perhaps that person being new here thought she had to leave a comment for every enrtry, and having nothing much to say...

| I too got an "OK" comment. This is my first submission to a challenge and I was really hoping for more constructive comments..I know I have a lot to learn and this place seems to be a great training ground for techniques. |

Hey-ho, I thought it was a nice shot, but there are some other very good shots in the challenge.
I have now viewed them all, and got partly through voting and commenting.
Maybe commenting would be quicker if I just put 'ok'

Well folks I can reveal all - my solitary comment is 'Nice'
So my picture presumably sits between bleu (ok) and MAK (Great) in terms of how good it is :- )

Well I think I've finished my commenting and voting. Now all I need to do is review who got what and put them in a final order.
ps as my score has now fallen continously and dropped nearly .8 I would really apreciate it if I could have some higher votes . .

I have one comment saying that my image doesn't convey speed. I hope I am not getting DNMC votes because people thought that the shot needs to convery HIGH speed.
