Hi,
I'm relatively new here. I just wanted to say hi and let my presence be known to all the wonderful photographers out there in the dpchallenge universe.
My background: Zero.
Heh, I am a complete photography noob. I just got my Sony F717 a couple of weeks ago, and it's my first camera...if you don't count that $10 camera I bought in the 4th grade.
Anyway, I've been learning a lot on this site and I finally got around to posting my first photos in my portfolio .It would be great if any of you could take a look at them and give me some constructive criticism...hell, I'll take any kind of criticism ;)
Ciao!

Welcome aboard Bruno. Well let's see what you have so far. You are clearly not afraid to crop tightly and get in close to your subject where many people, even advanced photographers are, you are already exploring strong lighting and contrast which is uncommon from such a beginner, and you are exploring design aspects and texture with your subject. That amounts to quite a bit from a new photographer. Maybe you already have some sort of background in art or design? My advice to you would be to continue to experiment a lot with all kinds of camera settings, lighting situations, and subjects. Another real important aspect to photography is learning how to crop your photos effectively. One good way to learn is to take some photos from a wider angle so that they contain more information then you will need and then in your editing program experiment very aggressively with different crops. This is a good way to learn how to eventually crop well in the field. And finally, be very patient and have fun. That will help you learn the most. Good luck.

I've never taken any classes in art or design, but I come from an artistic family, maybe I can attribute it to that :)
Thanks for the encouraging words!
I added a couple more pictures to my portfolio. One of which was only added because I figured having a macro of a bug couldn't hurt ;)

You've found some interesting subjects, and seem to have a good intuition for composition and lighting, at least for macro images. (Other subjects like landscapes and portraits have different considerations.)
All your photos have a pretty narrow depth of field; parts of the subjects are out of focus. While this has its uses, in most of the ones you have posted the whole subject should probably be in focus. You control this with the aperture; a larger number means a smaller aperture and produces a larger depth of field (more of the photo in focus). Experiment with this to get a feel for it. Put your camera in aperture priority mode and take a sequence of photos of the same thing (choose something with a lot of depth) using different aperture settings. |

D'oh! I had it backwards. I knew aperture had to do with getting in focus and depth of field, I just got the numbers confused.
So, just to get this straight... 2 would have a narrow depth of field, while 8 would be wider depth and more in focus?

very nice shots. You're loving that macro capability aren't you. First camera?? Looks like you already have an eye for composition and lighting. Yes, that short depth of field can be effective. I think it works well for most of those. nice shots. There was a flower where the focus was on a distant part of it-- might work better on the center disc (botanists now angry at my vocab) if you stick with the short DOF. Keep them coming... |

your portfolio sucks and you shouldn't waste any time submitting to any challenges.
just kidding. :) I'm just chicken to compete with you, considering these are like your first shots. your throwing star shot especially caught my eye -- fantastic in its simplicity.

You've got a good eye for point of view and lighting, so you're well on your way. Looks like we've got a natural here!

Hi Bruno, welcome. It's nice having a new kid on the block.. that means I'm not the newbie anymore :)
The rules are simple.. keep your toys picked up, do your own dishes and turn out the lights when you leave a room. Oh and the new kid has to feed the cat.

Bruno, I believe you are well on your way! I looked at your pictures and I really like them. My favorite is the Dandelion, your first macro.
Keep up the good work and by all means, enjoy yourself when you shoot.
Welcome to DPC!!!

I can do that! Except the picking up the toys thing, I have way too many toys and there is no place for them except the floor ;)
And, thanks everyone for the kind words! I'm filled with inspiration, or joy.... maybe it's gas. Either way, thanks!

Actually, we took it down. We (my brother, good friend and I) use to run our own web design company, but we all got contracted to work for AltaVista (which was recently bought by Overture, which was recently bought by Yahoo!). So now, we work with Yahoo.
We still take the occasional side contract, but only by referal.
Maybe one day I'll build a new site...one day...::stares wistfully out into the sunset::
