I have never before asked for comments on a photo outside of the challenges. But this particular photo I am asking for some comments on it. I a preparing for a special photo competition here locally where the photo must involve past or present trains that have been in Central PA at some point in time.

I took this photo last week and didn't realize the clearity of it or the angle in which I captured it being different until I had posted it on another site for comments then I realized just how much potential it holds. The comments there are always fantastic and I wanted to ask here cause I know I won't be being told just how good it is but I will also be told anything that I can do to improve it.

I like the composition of the train a lot, but I know you're looking for what we don't like here :) So here goes... Much of what I don't like probably couldn't be fixed, but I'll point it out anyway.

3 things...

1 ~ The backyard in the upper right seems not to belong. Short of buying the property and doing some major construction, I don't see how you could have avoided it though.

2 ~ The sign (really bright one) at the center top kind of hurts it for me too... Photoshop could get rid of it, of course, but I don't see an in-camera solution there either.

3 ~ (The only one you had control over) The rail on the left side leaves the frame then returns. I can't be certain but I think it would have been a stronger image if it stayed in frame... A slightly looser crop on the left would have been better (to my eye)...

That said, take all of this with a grain of salt since (imo) you're a better photographer than me :)

Did you crop this?

The reason I ask is that I think the curved tracks to the left of the train would be really interesting if you could see them. Of course if they weren't in the picture to begin with or if there was some other junk you needed to cut out this comment won't be that helpful. :)

Also there are two pieces of garbage I'd spot edit out if the rules allow that. (Actually they could be leaves, but they look like trash) One is near the front to the right of the train (Draw an imaginary line from the word Conrail straight right and you'll see what I mean) and the other is smack in the middle of the square shadowy area in the gravel on the left side of the train.

I'd also edit out the smaller too bright sign on the right side of the train (by the fence).

I was wondering if anyone would point that out. One person on the other site did point it out to me and lol yes she is a member here also! But that is the kind of things I need pointed out cause I am going to be paying a nice little entry fee for the competition and I want to have a chance. Top 3 photos will become part of a traveling art show at Southern Alleghnies Museum of Art next year.

As for being a better photographer...I'm not the one with the ribbon you are! But thanks for the compliment.

NO, that is what is so amazing about this whole photo. I took it a week ago and didn't really like it on first appearance then today I happened to notice it again and only editing I did to it was I adjusted the saturation levels and used an unsharpening mask on it. I do agree about getting rid of those few distractions, wish I could solve the problem with the tracks on the left.
