Entered my first photo for the blue challenge - couldn't wait, then came home to find out - oh no- Disqualified!!! apparently when I was trying to get my photo (which I cropped) to fit the ratios, my program added a 1 pixel border on the bottom. i never even noticed it. if anyone has a chance could you please tell me how to crop a photo to get the exact ratio you want and not have this happen? are some cropped photos not going to be the exact ratio no matter what? Please help - i would not want to keep submitting photos just to have them disqualified. I am also wondering now, that if I don't know how to do this, maybe this site is over my head right now as a beginner or have others started at a basic level like myself? Would appreciate any help you have time to give! thanks in advance. BJ

the ratio requirement goes away next week :)

To avoid a border or similar thing make absolutely sure that you don't crop outside of the image.

When you make your selection, make sure it doesn't go over or too close to the edge of the original photo. I think this is how this happens.
Another thing.. I think some people are making a selection, copying it and pasting it to a new canvas. I find it easier and more efficient to make a duplicate of the original file, make my selection, and then cropping and saving as a different file name... even adding more characters to the original .. ex. P897 might be renamed P897_1, and then, once resized to submission dimensions, P897_1a. This works well for me.. I always then know which ones are small just by a quick glance. Other methods work as well, but I would shy away from the copy/paste method personally.

I know how you feel! The exact same thing happened to me on my first entry! Hope it works out next time, though according to the new rules, this won`t be a problem!

Immediately after you have cropped, zoom in on the image, 300-500% or whatever it takes, and examine the edges to make sure a border didn't sneak in (which comes from cropping outside the image, as pointed out already). When you're done, double-click on the zoom tool and you're back to 100%, or "Actual Pixels". (Photoshop)

When cropping, also keep an eye on that most handy, but overlooked by many, of tools, the Info Window!

BJ... if you'd like to post your photo for us to look at and critique on here that might make you feel better! We could still critique it, and even though you won't be getting an actual score, learning should be your first goal on here. Just an idea!

There've been about ten of these (including one of mine) since I joined. Maybe we should have a "padded cell" gallery...

This is one challenge where I wish mine was disqualified. The more I look at mine and the more I look at the lame score the more I wish I hadn't submitted it. I could just claim I was drunk at the time.....

I thought that it would reget you automatically on the size when you enter. Maybe that was just on the image being over 150k because I made the same mistake also when I was in a hurry to enter. No most of the people on this website are basic and beginners who think they are experts.

Wow - what a great response - thanks everybody for helping! I am going to attempt to put the picture on here tonight (when I get home from work - on lunch now!).

Thanks Again.

One thing I noticed when I use PhotoImpressions, is that you have to click "apply to all layers" when you crop, even if you don't have any layers, or when you crop it, it adds a layer (a white background) to the area that you cropped. Pain in the butt, and I always forget, but it hasn't sneaked through all the way to submitting it yet.
Starting today (later tonight) there will not be the submission rule that there is now, it will be a lot more flexable. Good luck, and don't give up!! (I saw your pic, and it's very nice. I'd give it a good score. Looking forward to seeing your future entries!)

I'll back up your claim. I was sitting next to you at the bar, and later that night made a similar mistake. I got a little too "artsy" - always seems to happen after a couple of drinks.

Hello everyone -

Tried to get my picture to upload here but couldn't do it - will set up a webpage at some point on my internet service. (I tried to do that too and didn't work - not having a good couple of days on my computer!) Will try again tomorrow nite. Thanks again for everyone's help. thanks for letting me know you saw the picture Heather and for the nice comment. And thanks to all for your encouragement and helpful hints for my computer - I think I know what happened now. Hopefully will have the photo available tomorrow nite:)

Same thing happend to me witht the single pixel border, really pissed me off, I was like a single pixel what? it sucked.
12/04/2002 01:26:41 AM · #19
some (lower level) cameras actually add that 1 pixel border.

but really, come on mods, who the heck would do that ON PURPOSE?

Happened to me, my first week too. Boy was I bummed. Don't give up though. I came back and have enjoyed it immensely since then. (Though my picture I was so proud of, is tanking this week. Went for what I thought would be a nice dramatic lighting effect. So far everyone who commented mentioned that they disliked the lighting. Ahhh, but that is half the fun. Hope to see your entry next week.)

PS: Where are the new rules on photo sizes so we can get ready. I saw it mentioned that the 640x480 is history?
12/04/2002 02:15:13 AM · #21
It's in he Heads Up thread. Minimum any side is 160 pixels, maximum is 640 pixels; maximum file size is still limited to 150kb.

And single block colour borders ARE allowed in the new site.

i really hope that doesn't make anything tacky. i think there should be a limit on border size, btw. and are you guys gonna take away the single pixel gray border around the outside of the pictures that you have now?

i'm probably gonna submit the next pic i do in a really odd size.

Well, still haven't been able to post my picture through my service provider - going to give up at this point! Thanks to all for offering to look at it. will just wait for next challenge where it won't be a problem or try again this week and if it gets disqualified as least I'll know it won't happen again (I hope!). I clicked on the links in your postings and viewed some of your photos - you guys are good! Well, thanks again and good luck in the current challenge!

Hey BJ, I have access to your photo, (cause I'm a moderator) If you'd like, I can put it on my pbase site, and provide a link so everyone can check it out for you. I'd be more than happy to do that, and it wouldn't be difficult at all. I just don't want to do it without your permission. Let me know!
