i just upgraded from the Kodak Z612 to the Canon Rebel XTI with the EFS 18-55. do any of my fellow rebels have advice or tips for use?

You just joined a popular fraternity. This site alone has 4,364 Rebel owners, 4,133 XT owners, and 900 XTI owners. You're in pretty good company.

My advise, just keep shooting. Try a different setting each day or untill you are comfortable with it. I mostly keep mine on AV now.

Have fun!!! Its a great camera.

Buy a new lens. The kit lens sucks. I have a Tamron that I got off eBay for $45. Everyone told me not to buy it. They said it's a crappy lens. I won't lie and say it's L-quality, but it's better than the kit lens. Definitely get the "Nifty Fifty."

yea, i just upgraded from the kit lens, its total trash. Hit up the 50mm 1.8 for now, and then maybe the 17-40 f/4

I would have to agree with the general concensus. New lens/es. Kit lens are nothing compared to just a slight upgrade. I have now gone and picked up the 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8 USM (arriving soon hopefully). I also have 70-300mm and the kit lens. Have not put the kit lens on since picking up the 50mm and now with the 28mm on its way, the kit lens will be pushed further to the back of the line.

Take heaps of pics and try all difference sttings. A very good purchase to entry to the DSLR world. Look forward to seeing some of your work with the new purchase.

Ditto to everyone saying no kit lens. A Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 SP is the lens of choice for those looking for a standard zoom on a budget. I would suggest you pick that up and go from there. Also get some more batteries and if you can, an external shoe mounted flash. Also, get a blower to clean out that sensor and a remote shutter release of some kind (wired or wireless, I have both). With those things, you should be set for a while.

All excellent suggestions to this point. I would also invest in a remote! Might want to think about a "lens cap leash". That isn't the technical term, but canon lens caps have a tendency to fall off very easily in your bag. (Mine do anyway, and only the canons.) Shoot! Shoot! Shoot!

And I know...read the book or at least skim it and keep it handy for reference!

I have to second Kat here ion the remote, I got the Canon RC-1 remote for mine and love it. It also stores very nicely on the camera strap ;)

And yes, get the RC-1 remote. I love mine.

shoot at f:8 - f:11 if at all possible. you'll get the best sharpness in that range from my experience. close up you can get away with f:5.6

i used to own a 300d -w 18-55 efs - but gave it to my brother.

Scuse me, but the kit lens ain't all bad... it took all of these:

I wouldn't call that crap... probably not as good as some others, but it works if you work it :)

Yeah, the kit lens isn't great, but I wouldn't call it total junk. I rarely use mine because I'm usually shooting wildlife, but when I needed a wider angle for some waterfall shots, I was pleasantly surprised by the shots with the kit lens (using a small aperture).

Another thing I'd recommend (that I don't think has been mentioned yet) is the battery grip. Especially if you have bigger hands. Makes the camera much easier to hold.

One thing I had trouble with when I first bought a Rebel was keeping the ISO where I wanted it. Since this camera doesn't display the ISO anywhere, you have to remember to check it and set it where you want. Other than that, just be sure to read the manual! :-)

i didn't say it was bad, i was merely trying to advise on how to get the most out of it from my experience using it.

Yeah, Soup, you didn't say it was was junk, but it was said twice in this thread ("the kit lens sucks," "it's total trash"), so we were just responding to those statements. No big deal.

The kit lens is only "junk" if you are able to spend more than $500 for another lens. For your typical consumer lens around $250 or less, the kit lens will hold up just fine.

Go the Rebel! It's churning out some great pictures for me.

This problem doesn't apply to the 400D.

I've found that I almost exclusively use my 50mm 1.8.

I recently bought the Sigma 70-300, but I find it rather heavy to carry around. I will when I need to though. I also like the fact that it has a pretty decent macro capability. With this clip on macro converter

and using manual focus, I was able to get this close:

Even without the converter, it can get pretty close. Have a look at what people like timfythetoo have done with theirs to see how good it is:

As far as the kit lens is concerned, I don't often use it, but at least I've got the wide angle if I want it.
