Has this been done?? I noticed some photos in the last challenge with excellent use of short depth of field, and I always come back to it. I think it could produce some great shots, and you can still pull it off if you only have a basic camera |

sure! that out of focus grass really leads us to the bird.
Here's my entry!
crayons (again)
There were some goodies in this current challenge, and plenty of others around, just can't find them at the minute. I think its a good challenge idea, and makes everyone explore a neat little technique that can really make a photo. |

Pretty Ugly but Pretty Short (Sigma 105mm Macro)
We should have a short DOF challenge, so people can learn to appreciate it. I love short DOF when done properly. The only problem is that some Point and Shoot cameras cannot produce shallow DOF.

yeah, but with point and shoots, you could still use the effect of short DOF, without actually having it. You just need a bit of distance between parts of your subject you are shooting (?!?). It does rule out using short DOF on close ups, which are probably ruled out anyway. |

It is harder to do with a point and shoot, but not impossible. For PnS you have to work to get shallow DoF, for DSLRs you mostly have to work to get deeper DoF.
The tape measure example above was with a D60 and macro lens at f2.8. This was shot with a Canon G2 at f2.5 |
