There has been a lot of discussions regarding critiques and now there is even a critique club which has been great. I thought I would share a little bit of what I learned in college regarding giving thoughtful critiques. Our first problem was that we wanted to make the proccess overly complicated when it didn't need to be. What helped the most was when our teacher asked a student to just start by describing what they were looking at in the photo. By simply talking it through and describing a photo as if to someone who could not see it it helps you to break down the photo into it's visual elements. By doing that it will help to elicit a feeling from you, good or bad in regards to each photographic element. You can start by talking about what jumped out at you when you first looked at the photo. Was it the colors, the composition, or an emotional feeling? A critique can be simple by just discussing a couple of points that you think work well and a couple of points that could use some help with reasons why you think so or you can be very thorough and try to cover a list of photographic elements one by one. Whatever you do be sure to give reasons why you feel a certain way because that is the most important part of a critic. Just remember not to overcomplicate it just talk about what you are seeing.

Tim,
Good points.
While my critique outline looks like
(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) -
(2) BACKGROUND -
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL -
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL -
(5) YOUR OPINION ON THE PHOTO ΓΆ€“

I don't necessarily fill it out in that order. I fill it it in order of the elements that strike me first and the most.
That seems similar to your "simply talking it through and describing a photo as if to someone who could not see it it helps you to break down the photo into it's visual elements. "
