Voting just ended on my three sky entries in a row. They all did well, so I'm not here asking why they scored what they did.

Rather, I'm new to shooting dramatic skies, and I'd appreciate any input on why you think this one scored a 6.1:

while these two were 5.74 and 5.86:

Thanks!

The first IMO fits the challenge better than the last and the second doesn't really have enough story to do better.

the color is much more vibrant in the first, particularly with the complimentary blue & yellowish orange. Also, the sky is deep in the first- it has a whole range of contrast while the other two, the whole image has a good range, just not necessarily the sky.

They're all very good tho! :0)

Just looking at the thumbnails. We are color junkies. Doesn't matter if it's real or not, just give us the color! The first one is colorful and the second two aren't.
Looked at the two. Personally, I think the bottom half of both are too dark. The subjects are at the bottom and have been hidden(more or less) by the pp. The contrast between the sky and sea/land is to great. I don't know if this was advanced editing, but try dropping a gradient onto the sky on both originals so you can get the top and bottom into a closer range without causing the bottom half to get darker. Then process it from there.

Thanks, everyone. Anyone else have any thoughts?

The first has a great composition - great clouds, dramatic lighting, natural photographic feeling - the dark and light work well togerther and the shadows are dark and some of the distant stuff is lost in the shadows (a good thing).
THe others are less dramatic.

The higher score is darker than the other two. At this time, I have noticed that scores average a bit higher for darker photos. Just my observations. Van

Jeff - the first (highest scoring entry) has more dramatic colors as others have stated, but another thing that impacted the second and third images is some slight grain in the sky of the 2nd and 3rd entries. When you adjust the blue and cyan to boost colors, the grain issue can crop up. Doing some smoothing after color adjustment would likely fix this.

I personally like the weekend photo better - a really nice relaxed feel shot

Jeffrey, the photo that scored highest to me is by far the best of the three. There is a lot of drama, excellent tonal range, and a slight sense of mystery. I also like the "drama above" shot, with nice composition due to placement of guy sitting on the bank. However, both it and the "distant skies" photo look oversharpened to me. The "distant skies" also looks like the red channel is too saturated.
