Hi All,

This week was my first week at posting a picture. I've already had 56 people vote on my picture and only 7 people have left comments. Is this normal?

Do you comment every picture you vote on?

Do you vote on every picture?

Last week I voted on every picture and commented on everyone as well. This week I'm finding it difficult because of the subject, but that's another thread.

Thanks

Yeah, that's pretty typical.. What's not so typical is now that people can hide behind the anonymity, I have gotten comments like:

4/22/2002 - Lame

:P

Actually, from what I've been reading here in the forums that should only be this week. That's ok I got a similar bad comment.

4/22/2002 - bad image...blah!

But that's ok cause it was a bad image. ;)

Like life...there are people who will ride by your house and toilet paper it in the darkness of night.

Then there are those that will stand toe to toe with you and disagree....I prefer the latter.

Like David says "Not forever". When the contest is over we get to see who said what. I wonder if some folks have forgotten that.

While this is the first picture I have submitted. I get the impression that the names of the commenters do show up after voting has completed. The inability to interact with the voter is a good thing. This way you get what they thought unencumbered by what you say.

I just ignore stupid comments. If they dont have a clue what to say about your picture then I really dont have time to deal with them, or a need to.

If someone has a stupid or rude comment, it will be available for everyone to see after the contest is over. That is a good reason to think about what you are putting down for a comment. You can only hide behind an anonymous comment for a few days.

This is the first challenge I've entered, though I voted in the last one. Having your own photo really gives you a better idea of what is "constructive" and what is simply criticism.

I've gotten comments that I should have blurred the background more and focused in tighter on the subject...which I agree with, but I was at the largest aperture of my camera and as close as I could be in focus to the subject, so it's not really something I could say "oh, good idea, I'll do that next time".

However, I'm sure I'm guilty of these unconstructive observations too, so I'll try to be more conscious of this in upcoming challenges.

The thing is, the people who give the comments don't know the conditions under which you took the shot, so the comments in their eyes are useful, they didn't know for example that you already took the picture at the maximum aperture (the info doesn't get posted until later, and we don't know the camera type either)

The less constructive comments are more like 'this sucks' or 'lame'. Equally unconstructive (but nice to get none the less) are the 'good' or 'great photo'

Maybe I should have posted here instead of in the OTHER "comments" thread -- here's a link.

True. I think maybe in later comments though I'll try to modify these things that might have been limited by the camera when I see them with things such as "If you could have" or "If possible". I am actually surprised at how many people there are with old-ish or cheap-ish cameras (with limited control over things like aperture and thus depth of field, white balance, etc.), like me, though hopefully not for long :-)

yes, thats a good idea. because it's entirely possible you didnt know you should open your aperature more or whatnot and someone could clue you into that.

there's never any one definitive comment. in fact they often vary a lot. i kind of take them all as a sort of aggregate thing that i mush together and get what i can from.

i try to hold back my comments because most of them would involve me insisting that everyone is homosexual in some fashion

Much of this would be obviated if the photographer's initial comments were available to voters (instead of just the title). Almost all of the comments I received (on my first entry) were about things I had mentioned myself. If we are going to allow the comments to be read during the voting, then I see no reason to not show the initial description. Otherwise, I suggest we just make the comments and replies unavailable until after the voting is over.

one of Australia's greatest exports, and yet no one in Oz even looks at the stuff!

From one of the Aussies invading the UK ...
My experience fosters knowledge - don't drink it :)

my point was that i dont have any constructive thoughts to offer to photographers, so i keep them on the ground. if i start letting people know what i think of them, landgon will ban me

I have a question for all of the photographers here. Would you all rather not get a comment that just says "great picture" or "there is nothing that I can add to this". Are you looking only for constructive comments? Do you appreciate knowing that someone likes your picture, even if they have nothing else to say? Or am I wasting my typing on some of the pictures?
