My photo last week got 8 comments. And so far I have 10 comments on this weeks photo. I will give out as many comment as I am recieving. I will give out 10 comments this week and if I get more I will give more. Sooo...If you want a comment from me YOU will have to comment more. It doesnt have to be a critique, just something simple as Nice photo. Please no rude comments, because I will email you with a "Why"? I like to hear what you have to say. Just thought I would let you know.

I am surprised at the paucity of comments so far this week. There is a low number of entries and I have a pretty good score, but still only 4 comments from 131 voters.

How about giving one more than you recieve?
11/26/2002 12:06:27 PM · #4
My theory is to comment on whatever inspires you to comment... If a photo motivates you to speak, then speak. Why limit yourself to x number of comments just because you got x number of comments?

If everybody took this attitude then there would be a *lot* fewer comments flying around.
I have received 10 comments on an entry that is doing so-so (which is a whole 'so' better than I expected it to do!) and I'm quite pleased with that.

I recently noticed that my comments given was only 20 or so higher than my comments received and have been trying to leave more comments to improve this ratio, but I will (mostly) only do so if I feel I have something constructive to say.

Well .. this is not a very friendly approach !
Maybe you would like to know your score so you can give it to everybody ? What about that ?

You comment if you want
You do not comment if you do not want

And you do not have to comment mine ! ( one less to do )

Cheers and thanks for your enthousiasm

Hmm...isn't it "do unto others..."? :-)

I have 4 kids and not very much time, but I try to comment on as many photos as I can. There are some folks who don't care to even comment. Unstead of wasting my time every week trying to comment on as many photos as I can and only get a lousy 8 comments then I will do what I said. I dont see anything wrong with that. You get what you give. If more people were to look at it this way then I think people would comment more. Sorry to have upset you all! If you don't like it, then COMMENT! And I have been giving unto others, but do they give back? NO! So they will get what they give.
Lionelm
I don't care to know what my score is. Where in the world did that come from? I just want more comments and am telling everyone that "to get more they need to give more". Thats all.

Photos that are inspiring usually get a lot of comments. Photos that are shocking usually get a lot of comments. Photos that have any high impact value get a lot of comments. Photos that are just average don't get a lot of comments.

If you want a lot of comments, make a photo that inspires them.

Ouch...sorry to nail you on this one John but is the point of the site not to make people better photographers? And...If you upload an average photo...Would it be not the "right" thing to do by commenting on ways of improving the photo so that it CAN be what you speak of?

Sonja, I agree that there have been very few comments received. I so far have received 12 comments, but I wrote 55. I commented on those I felt really moved me to talk, and even if everyone doesn't agree with my comments, I felt it was the right thing to do. I'm not critizing you for giving out as many as you receive because this may be a good idea, however I feel that you should keep in mind that you might not be giving to those who you received from, therefore punishing someone who actually did what you wanted, but just wasn't lucky enough to be one of the "chosen" ten or so. I know it's probably very hard for those who have been on this site, and increasingly receive less and less comments on their photos. I feel that everyone should still try their hardest to give out comments to those they feel they need to comment on, regardless of how many they have received. To EVERYONE ELSE... please try to give out more comments if you can, if you feel you are not getting enough, don't complain unless you have given out a lot of them! Also as Sonja said, Please no rude comments... constructive criticism or an explanation of your voting is fine, but just plain rude comments should be kept to yourself. I really appreciate the comments I have received so far! And the comments that have explained how I can better my picture are very helpful! Thanks all! Once again have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Hannukah, or just wonderful week! :-)

Hummmmm. I didn't enter this week and left a 113 comments.
I don't think tit for tat ever works for long.
Of course that's just MHO.

Yes, it would be the right thing to do. How many have you commented on this week and made suggestions like this?

So the good get better and the bad, well they stay the same or quit. Good one John. Way to put it for a photograghy who is so popular on this site.

I have left more comments than anyone on this site at this point. I have left constructive comments as well. Maybe I should just stop doing that and abandon the "critiqu club" that I have started... it's probably a waste of my time, huh?

11/26/2002 01:08:03 PM · #16
Im not suggesting that people not comment on photos. I just stated a simple truism about this site that I am personally on a mission to change.

However, I am not approaching this task by telling people that i'm not gonna comment on theirs if they don't comment on mine... it doesn't work that way :)

11/26/2002 01:14:49 PM · #17
Just a quick idea that might increase comments dramatically... if everyone tries to go by this standard, it might be nice, and we could maybe build some trust on the website!

What if when you enter a photo for the next weeks competition, you try to vote on at least half of the pictures up for this weeks competition. If we all do this then we might start getting those who received a lot of comments to possibly give more for the next challenge, which you are in! Any comments on this?

John simply stated a fact - surely he's the last person who should be slated over comments given his (and his crew's) current (much appreciated) efforts!

Although those photo's may receive most comments, 90% will be 'nice pic'. What use are they to someone who wants to improve?

Enough talk - I'm off to leave some more comments...
11/26/2002 01:24:27 PM · #20
O.K. My philosophy for commenting.....Vote on all picture first, then go back and comment from the bottom up. After all, this is a learning site, doesn't it seem that the photos that score the poorest might need the most help? (Not always, but it's a good starting point). Whenever the grind of low scoring shots "gets to me", I go up and comment on a few 10s! Easy comments to offer, like Nice Shot!, etc. Then I force myself back to the bottom and comment some more. I comment as I have time for. Sometimes, I comment on EVERY shot in a challenge, sometimes only a few (usually because I skipped the week).
Proof - how did I stack up against the "best", John Setzler?
Me John
2340 3406 Comments Given
460 1080 Comments Rec'd
4920 4948 Votes

(My ratio is higher, but then again, John has placed 4x!

Anyone heard of (seen) the movie - "Pay It Forward"?.....(I haven't, but I get the idea) Please see it.

If everyone said that, nobody would get a single comment... ever!

Sonifo,

Photos that have a strong impact will always get more comments in the challenges...you can rant all you like...but it won't change the number of comments 'less-inspiring' images receive.

Instead of banging your head against the wall and lashing out at people who have done well on the site...take action that will give you the desired result...more feedback. I suggest you find another source. Try finding someone(s) with whom you'd like to discuss your photos and theirs. You'd be more likely to reap the reciprocity you desire in a smaller group. Sheez...I hate to include a corny plug...but chat has been an incredible source for these kind of relationships...come on over if you have the time/inclination :)

Much luck to you!

I am starting to get frustrated so I will leave for now, so I don't hurt anyones feelings.
Have a good day all and remember to comment on the bad photos and not just the good. Peace!
