I didn't include myself.. hmmm.. someone pick a photo for me to critique and I will do one too...

After resisting the temptation to give you one of mine, I randomly selected This one by choosing #25 of a randomly selected challenge.

LOL...I just went to take a peak at my profile to see if my tech photo made it to my top 4 scores (which it did :) and found TWO new comments on two of my past entries ...LOL The luck of the draw landed TWO of my entries as part of the ones for this 'test' critique by us posted by John...what are the odds ;)

I critiqued that photo and added my own link to it at the end of the list in the original post in this thread...

I'm not sure if we will be able to start with photojournalism or not. Everyone has not critiqued their assigned photos yet. We need to have a brief discussion about these and there is one other small and minor exercise I would like to perform before we actually start.

However, in the spirit of your enthusiasm, please feel free to do in depth critiques on the current photojournalism challenge for practice if you like :) I'm sure the photographers will appreciate it :)

Hmmm, good idea... Maybe I'll roll some dice and pick some folks to practice on... Be interesting to see how long 10 to 12 critiques would take.

Done with my homework!

This was rough 'cause I'm such a kitten (ha ha) and I really didn't care for this photo from the get-go. I feel like I'm being ultra-harsh. I guess I just need to grow some critiquing callouses.

I would offer the suggestion that since there are so (relatively) few images submitted for Photojournalism that rather than starting in on the heavy-duty critiquing this week we all work together to put more of a critiquing spin on our comments? 147 images is a lot easier to comment on than 300 -- still not easy to just whip out, though. I plan on using the voting procedure to work on honing my critical eye. I can spend almost twice as long per photo as in other challenges...LOL!

Again, just a suggestion.

What do you think of them as the photographer being critiqued?
Do you think they are useful?

You did fine. I agree with most of what you (and others) said. This was one of my first entries and really didn't have a feel for what I was doing. As my profile shows, I'm very new to both photography and digital photography so this is all one big learning experience. Now, if you'd like another go, how about doing a critic on my technology entry :-)

Very useful, in fact I will post your suggestions on my site tonite so you can see them.

As my highest scored entry, your critique was taken with a grain of salt :) But you did make some really good points (bg distraction, dof). I think you were very detailed which is good. Your negatives, though, outweighed your positives quite a bit :) I try (and this is me, it don't mean you gotta do the same :) to find and state as many things I 'like' about the photo as the things I don't like. That would be my only beef with your critique (unless of course, you didn't find anything you liked about it)....but PLEASE, don't get me wrong, I do think you did a good job, and you gave me more things to look at in that photo than all the other comments combined.

Geez, my last post made me realize that we might all have to take some heat from the photographers whose photos we critique. Hope everyone understands that the critiques are based on our own tastes and opinions, and are to be taken lightly. I really don't want to start receiving death threats from someone who didn't like what I said 'bout their work.

:)

Any comments you receive should also be in the form of constructive criticism -- how could your critique be clearer, more helpful, or to clear up factual errors...Simply decline to review any more photos by anyone who calls you names...

You're all still doing fine by my standards (pretty high, I think). So long as you keep your remarks to opinions about the photo and keep the language within reasonable bounds there should be little problem, especially if folks are submitting to this process voluntarily.

Submitting .. voluntarily ??
LOL
I am giving, so that I can receive.
BTW, anyone who wants to practice giving critiques (as if we all have free time) is welcome to critique mine. If you want feedback on it, let me know.

I just finished my critique.
At first I though "oh, well what can you say about it?". But then it was easier than I thought. Took me quite some time though. I just hope that all the negative criticism (because I happen not to like this photo very much) does not let kathleenm down.

I'm The idiot who missed the Macro Challenge and submitted my dog picture for the technology challenge. I was caught up on voting for the first time and have only had my camera for a couple of months. I am sorry if I offended anyone if anyone could help with not meeting the challenge but rather critigue my photos I could send some I think are not bad for a newbie. pr.rogers@sympatico.ca plus which forums may be benificial. Thanks Paul

lol...no, kathleenm is not let down. :-) It's actually exactly what I wanted to hear, because I liked the photo, but knew it could be better. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that - I think this is a GREAT idea!

Oh, to clear up the aperture confusion, I shot this with my boyfriend's brand new D60, not the G1, and I am still in the learning mode with it.

Thanks again!

Don't feel you are an idiot. Or if so, you are in good company. My original comment still stands. I thought you missed the challenge and said 6 for macro, 4 for technology.
A good photo, but could use a tad more DOF to bring out the nose. Otherwise, an "good, but not exciting" subject.
As for sending photos, I would recommend you sign up on pbase.com where you can post pictures. Then you can post links to pictures that you want input on. That process works well.

Hang in there.
